Mathematical physics has many facets, of which we shall briefly give a (very partial) description, centered around those of main interest for Elliott and us (Moshe Flato and I), and around the seminal scientific and personal interactions that developed between us since the sixties until Moshe’s untimely death in 1998. These aspects still influence my scientific activity and my life. They also had as a corollary a variety of “parascientific activities”, in particular, the foundation of IAMP (the International Association of Mathematical Physics) and of the journal LMP (Letters in Mathematical Physics), both of which were strongly impacted by Elliott, and Elliott’s long insistence that publishers do not demand “copyright transfer” as a precondition for publication but are satisfied with a “consent to publish”, which is increasingly becoming standard. I argue against the currently-prevalent view in philosophy of physics that algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT) is the correct framework for philosophy of quantum field theory and that "conventional" quantum field theory (CQFT), of the sort used in mainstream particle physics, is not suitable for foundational study. In doing so, I defend the position that AQFT and CQFT, understood in an appropriate sense, ought to be understood as rival programs to resolve the mathematical and physical pathologies of renormalization theory, and that CQFT has succeeded in this task and AQFT has failed. I also defend CQFT from recent criticisms made by Doreen Fraser.
Nowadays it is unthinkable to learn and teach the scientific sense of physical and mathematical sciences without deepening its intellectual and cultural background, e.g. history and its foundations. In my talk several case–studies on the relationship between physics and mathematics were presented. Here, for brevity's sake, I will only discuss some of them.

The relationship that is widely presumed to hold between physical theories and their successors, in which the successors in some sense explain the success of the theories they replace, is known commonly as 'reduction.' I argue that one traditional approach to theory reduction in physics, founded on the notion that a superseded theory should simply be a mathematical limit of the theory that supersedes it, is misleading as a general picture of the relationship whereby one theory encompasses the domain of empirical validity of another. I defend an alternative account that builds upon a certain general type of relationship between dynamical systems models describing the same physical system. I demonstrate how this particular relationship resembles the methodological prescriptions set out by Ernest Nagel's more general approach to reduction across the sciences. Examining relativistic quantum eld theory we claim that its description of subnuclear phenomena can be understood most adequately from a semiotic point of view. The paper starts o with a concise and non-technical outline of the rmly based aspects of relativistic quantum eld theories. The particular methods, by which these dieren t aspects have to be accessed, can be described as distinct facets of quantum eld theory. They dier with respect to the rela- tion between quantum elds and associated particles, and, as we shall argue, should be interpreted as complementary (semiotic) codes. Viewing physical theories as symbolic constructions already came to the fore in the middle of the nineteenth century with the emancipation of the classical theory of the electromagnetic eld from mechanics; most notably, as we will point out, with the work of Helmholtz, Hertz, Poincar e, and later on Weyl. In this paper I will argue in favor of the view that if physics is to become a coherent metaphysics of nature, it needs an interpretation, namely (i) a clear formulation of its ontological/metaphysical claims and (ii) and a precise understanding of how such claims are related to the world of our experience, which is the most important reservoir of traditional, merely aprioristic metaphysical speculations.
