2021, Envisioning Architectural Narratives
This paper arises from a pedagogical experience based on the development of a methodology for research in the field of construction of research problems in architecture. The experience was addressed to students in the fifth and final year of the architecture career at the National University of La Matanza, in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The main objective was an introduction to the broad and complex field of academic research as a pre-thesis exercise. The hypothesis that sustained the experience was to understand tropology as a tool for the figuration (Haraway, 1992; Braidotti, 2019) of epistemic and heuristic problems. The methodology used consisted in developing an apparatus that generates research problems from the recognition of a topos – a topic or epistemic commonplace belonging to the disciplinary field of the career – and its relationship with a tropos –a figuration–. On the one hand, the topos was chosen by each one of the students according to their socio-cultural problems and according to their specific living situations within the framework of architecture and urbanism. On the other hand, the tropos emerged from an exercise of figurative displacement that made it possible to account for the predicative rather than denominative potential of the tropos. From the semantic crossing between the topos and the tropos, the students constituted their own syntagm that also served as the future title and tagline of the research project. This syntagma had the characteristic of being a hybrid, a space of signification generated by the displacement of the topic towards the creation of the new place, of fictional character, which had to be narrated and described according to its own logic and which functioned as an inhabited threshold between the topic and the u-topic, a place that is installed beyond the topical, the tropical.
ARCHITECTURE: EVERYDAY LIFE PREPOSITIONS. Arquitectura dispuesta: preposiciones cotidianas.
Nowadays. the signs do not bear very good tidings for architectural action: architecture is reviled by society and misunderstood by those who manage its charters. In this brief essay we appeal to the need to recall the specificity that defines the status architecture: permanent redefinition. Since there will obviously be reactions to this straight forward statement, what this texts strives to do is to show and to reveal is that this statement is neither simple nor reactionary by narrating a series of stories from different fields of knowledge (philosophy, sociology, literature, history). The point of departure for the transformation of architecture is the condition that it must appear as a form that makes architectural action visible as an expansive way of thinking. This depiction of one of a mile that sees his burrow as the negative space of its entirety, as a topology of a physical and non-physical spatiality, of work and dis-work, something that helps to redeem architecture from the daunting role that our times have assigned to it: the unsuspecting recipient of the consequences of regulations and bureaucratic actions of asociety that no longer requires such action in its culture. We propose to dig and delve into a set of exploratory relationships that remind us of our skills and allow us to think in terms of inhabitants and constructors of our own worlds, beyond building disciplines and practices.

The potential of the use of the concept of collective subjectivity, in literary analyses, has been partially discerned by Mario Vargas Llosa, Gérard Klein, and a group of scholars inspired by Klein's observations (Bellagamba; Picholle; Tron, 2012). Since none of them have proposed any systematic framework, the paper theorizes the concept, proposes an analysis methodology, and presents the results of a model analysis of the collective subjectivity of Jorge Amado's marginalized characters and its relation to the hegemonic discourses of Amado's storyworlds and of Brazil in the 1930s, respectively. The article also presents an evaluation of the concept's usefulness for narrative scholars. As analyzing a fictional collective subjectivity requires a custom-made framework, it has been elaborated on the basis of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's (2001) Discourse Theory, Discourse-Theoretical Analysis (both alarmingly absent in literary studies), the psycho-sociological framework for real-world collective subjectivity analysis (Fabris; Puccini; Cambiaso, 2019), and narratological findings related to Possible Worlds Theory and fictional minds (Palmer, 2004). The study confirms that the use of the concept as an analytical tool can shed new light on our understanding of numerous narrative art works, especially regarding such issues as focalization, perspective, ideology, narrative empathy, unreliable narration, and consciousness representation. Moreover, the framework enables us to: 1) describe precisely the particularities of the ideological profile of a fictional collectivity and the narrator's/implied author's attitude towards them; 2) relate this profile to the context systematically (both to the storyworld and real-world context). Keywords: fictional minds; hegemony and ideology in fiction; narrative perspective; unreliable narration; Laclau & Mouffe’s Discourse Theory; discursive struggles.

First of all, I think that we must thank the bishop, Mr. Luis Quinteiro —and this is no stylistic resort— for being present throughout the conference: it is quite uncommon, and those of you who usually attend this kind of event know what I am talking about. I think that his company has been very positive. Talking about our subject, I would just like to mention something. I believe that the main problem about church-building is not so much complying with the liturgy, which must be taken for granted, but the capacity to evoke the mystery: the conviction that God inhabits these particular buildings —that is why they become sacred— God physically lives there. That certainty should lead us to work in a particularly careful manner. I guess that when you invite guests home, and they are people you appreciate, important people, you will clean it as much as possible; you will do the chores that you had neglected for some time. I believe that the future has to be approached from a humble attitude, if you like, also demanding excellence —we have seen it in some examples quoted during these days, even this morning—, and the future is the last word in the title of this panel discussion. The future must be faced with the ambition of trying to provide the best for these projects —somehow, Abel's sacrifice: the best thing that each time, each artist, each architect, each community has—.

Celebrating the centenary of the publication of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, it is proposed a reading of some connections between this classic of literature and the architectural thought in the way of teaching architecture, as adopted by FAUUSP. The importance of Proust’s stylistic inn...

Fictions, taken in a broad sense, are part of the architect’s daily practice. From the definition of the program to the design process, architects need narratives to guide their decision making. Fiction, in the strict sense, has also been present in different forms throughout the history of architecture, providing alternative ideas or offering favorable environments for speculation, and for the generation of discourses and criticism. “Fictions…” offers a quick overview of the ways in which fiction has interacted historically with the discipline as a starting point to analyze the work of a new generation of architects who, working in a moment of particular blurring of boundaries between architecture and its periphery, use it in different ways. The first part analyzes the traditional use of fiction as a trigger for design processes, using the work of the American office Design With Company as a case study. Secondly, the text examines the phenomenon which, gathered around the discussion on architecture-fiction, finds architecture professionals gravitating towards the production of architectural fictions as an alternative field to practice the profession.
