Firearms, ammunition, dangerous objects, and non-lethal self-defense devices

Hosts and guests are always required to comply with applicable laws concerning firearms, ammunition, dangerous objects, and non-lethal self-defense devices.

To help ensure safety at Airbnb listings we require that both Hosts and guests follow the below guidelines.

Guidelines for firearms

Hosts and guests are not allowed to have firearms in listings unless possession complies with applicable laws, the firearms are clearly disclosed, safely stored, and the listing accommodates only one booking at a time. Here are some important details as to what this means for Hosts and guests:

Disclosure requirements

• Hosts must disclose the presence of firearms on their listing page.
  • Hosts may also inform guests that they are not allowed to bring firearms to their listing by stating in their listing description that firearms are not allowed.
• Guests must disclose and obtain the Host’s consent in advance of check-in, unless the Host’s listing description states that firearms are allowed.
• Hosts and guests are also required to disclose the presence of non-functional firearms and replicas because these can easily be mistaken for functional weapons.
• If prior notice is not provided and the Host or guest prefers to cancel the reservation, Airbnb will allow cancellation without penalty.

Safe storage requirements

• Hosts are required to safely store firearms by keeping them unloaded in a locked storage container (like a gun safe) that is immovable and inaccessible.
• Guests it is not practical for guests to use immovable containers, but they must either safely store firearms in a locked container or secure them through a device that makes them unusable (like a gun lock or cable lock).

Guidelines for ammunition, dangerous objects, and non-lethal self-defense devices

Hosts and guests are allowed to have ammunition and dangerous objects (like a bow and arrow, fireworks, or an ax) as long as they are stored in a reasonably safe manner.

• For example, ammunition should be kept in a locked space or container, fireworks should be stored away from open flames in a space that is inaccessible to children, and an ax should be covered by an ax sheath or kept in a locked space.

• Guests must disclose and obtain the Host’s consent in advance of check-in if they plan to bring ammunition or a dangerous object to a listing. If a guest does not provide a Host with prior notice and the Host prefers to cancel the reservation, Airbnb will allow cancellation without penalty.

Hosts and guests are also allowed to have non-lethal self-defense devices (like pepper spray) at a listing as long as they are kept in a reasonably safe manner.

• For example, pepper spray is considered to be stored in a reasonably safe manner if it is in a closed bag and the device has a safety mechanism that reduces the risk of accidental discharge.
