Never make a deal with a Fae. You’ll end up on your knees, begging for your life.
Dark Falls—the most prestigious school in the three realms—is in session. Brooding vampires, snarky mermaids, and vicious Fae all want a piece of me...and they're not willing to ask permission.
Flynn, the cruel bully.
Trent, the thirsty vampire.
And Cole, the dark Fae prince. I hate him most of all.
How am I supposed to kick their asses in the arena and the classroom with all the mysteries and dangers lurking in the stony halls? And why is my sister keeping so many secrets—including the identity of the man she's seeing?
They want me out of the academy. They’re beautiful. Devious. Relentless.
I'm worse.
I'm a Winslow witch, and I've got enough fire to burn them all.

Before I get into the problems (and there are many) I’ll list what I enjoyed about Dark Falls Academy. Firstly, I’m a sucker for good urban fantasy, and the author has done a lot of interesting world building here. The setting—a school for supernaturals—is cliché, but she makes up for it with realistic politics (I love politics!), unconventional supernatural creatures, and a truckload of mystery. This is a world that compels you to discover more.
I also enjoyed the fast-paced plot, which made it easy for me to finish this book. The fast pacing was also the undoing of this story, however. The narrative is disjointed: there were several instances where, as a reader, I was totally confused. Did this happen in the past, or is this happening now? What time of day is it? Wasn’t Jules, the main character, doing this exact same thing earlier in the story?
Lots of interesting world building elements got left by the wayside in the rush. For example, Jules doesn’t seem to have learned a lot of new witchery after she completes the semester, even though that’s the whole point of being there. Her fire powers seem totally laughable—everyone treats it as an empty threat, because it is. She can barely toast an eyebrow, let alone kill someone. This really impairs the world building, her character, and the plot resolutions.
Speaking of plot resolutions: the ending was a mess. Cole, the antagonist, gains new powers that aren’t explained properly, and don’t really make sense. It would have made far more sense if Jules had done it subconsciously (if you read the book you’ll know what I mean). Many important parts of the book are left dangling without explanation.
This book is dominated by two things: bullying and sex. Speaking of sex, this was a huge disappointment. This main character constantly thinks about sex, and sex is insinuated everywhere. But that’s a lie: THERE IS NO SEX. I was anxiously waiting for some awesome guy-on-guy action (it’s there in the keywords people!) but there was nada. There is no hetero sex either; Jules remains a virgin.
If I could compare this book to a girl, I’d say she’s pretty, coy, and leaves you with a deflated dick. If I could treat the reader as a guy (please indulge my metaphor here) I’d tell him to find another guy who can give him what he deserves.
In terms of character and emotion, it’s all over the place. I love Jules because she’s strong and incredibly (obsessively?) determined. I like her dad very much as well. But nearly everyone else is vain, cruel, and tries to bully her. Cole is genuinely toxic. He has too few redeeming qualities to make me love him; I simply despise him.
Overall, I rate this book 3 stars because the story has a lot of potential, and the author clearly has talent. But I came looking for paranormal romance with a hot MMF relationship, and I didn’t find it.
However the book feels really jumbled and things seem to just randomly happen with no rhyme or reason, which is totally confusing.
The book is labelled as reverse harem but it is NOT! It is enemies to lovers at best but by the end they are just more enemies then when they started.
By the time I got to the end of the book there wasn't one character that I actually liked, including Jules.
The whole books is just everyone bullying and backstabbing each other, which means you don't really get invested in any of the characters as none of them have any redeeming qualities.
Even Jules doesn't seem to care about her boyfriend (Trent) at all and doesn't seem bothered that she basically keeps cheating on him with Cole. The whole book Jules is fantasising about Cole and thinking about sex but nothing ever happens, meanwhile stringing Trent along.
Jules also pretends to be powerful and basically thinks she knows everything but really I just found her annoying and whiny 👎
