Clock Repair Basics is a clock repair course in itself. Start with letting down the mainspring power, then take apart a movement, clean it, and repair it! The basics on escapements, pendulums, bushing work and more are all in this book. You'll have a glossary of clock terms, a lubrication guide, a beginner s guide to strike and chime mechanisms, a section on electric clocks, and a special chapter featuring five starter clocks: OG, American spring driven strike clock, cuckoo, 400-day, and modern Hermle chime clock. There are 92 pages of text, with index, and 158 photos and line drawings in this large 8-1/2 x 11 format. Experienced repairers will also find plenty of useful information in the book. Compare your methods to the ones described in the book, and use whatever helps you! Keep it right on the bench for the hard-to-remember mainspring length formula, the methods for determining beats per hour and pendulum length, and quick-reference adjustments for the major escapements.

I found this little book to be superb. It is an introduction to clock repair in general, and so necessarily cannot cover everything. It assumes some general mechanical knowledge, aptitude, and understanding. A reader possessing those prerequisites will find clear explanations supplemented with excellent line drawings and photos. It does not cover detail on many specific clocks, but instead discusses general situations, illustrating them with some different examples. Having read the book, I'm now eager to tackle cleaning and lubrication of our balky vintage wall clock. Given the information in this book, I have little doubt it will be successful. If that goes well, I may go on to more complex repairs, inspired by what I've read here but likely supplemented by details on whatever specific clock I choose to repair.

This is a book for someone with strong mechanical skills and aptitude. It is intended for someone who wants to learn about clocks and begin basic repairs and maintenance, but it has the information you will need to build on if your really want to learn. There are a few areas I think the author should re-visit for the next edition but I strongly recommend it for beginners.

A few years ago we had a mantel clock that had been owned by my wife's father repaired and overhauled. In truth, it cost a LOT more than the clock is worth in terms of money but it's one of the very few things of her father's that my wife had. The clock worked perfectly after that until we moved. I knew enough to remove the pendulum, but nothing else about moving a clock. During a sudden stop in my car, the clock slid off the back seat onto the floor. Needless to say, it didn't work when we got to our new home. Several of the gears' axles (which were a total mystery to me) had popped out of their holes in the plates. Not knowing any better I tried to work them in place with the result that both mainsprings sprung, luckily not hurting me.
Not wanting (or able to afford) a second pro repair I started looking for information on how I could fix it myself I came across this book as well as others by the same author. I emailed him with my situation and he said that this would be the most useful of his books in my case.
I soon got a real education on mechanical clocks. The book alone helped me immensely and the author was kind enough to answer one or two questions I had. The result is that the clock is now running happily in it's new home, keeping time and chiming appropriately. I have no desire to repair more clocks, but now I have a good enough understanding of our to make future repairs.

I have an old Seth Thomas clock, been in the family for over 100 years. Stopped working some time ago but I would have to either mail it to a shop or use one of the locals taking weeks to months and a hefty bill. Never worked on a clock before but I’m handy. With the book it was an easy partial disassembly, clean and lube. Took a couple of hours but runs perfect now. Also an interesting read into the world of these clocks. If you have some knowledge in this area, it may be too low level. But for me, great.

I ordered this book so I could fix a cuckoo clock and a mantle clock. Not as many photos as I expected. But I will muddle through as best I can. Will not attempt a repair on the mantle clock, as it is a family heirloom, and I don't want to mess it up. Fairly disappointed.

I bought this book along with several others to learn how to care for my small collection of mechanical clocks. This book was right on the mark for a beginning student of clocks! His discussions are not too deep and contain adequate pictures and diagrams to help explain his points. His first chapter on tools and subsequent chapters on the various repairs does leave the novice frustrated at times suggesting that many of the repair tasks for clocks requires an expanse of expensive specialized tools [bushing machine, jeweler's lathe, milling machine]. More emphasis on basic hand tool use would be helpful in his discussions. His chapter on five starter clocks provided insightful troubleshooting for the type clocks he suggests starting with and working up to. Overall, a great starter book! I plan to buy his "Chime Clock Repair" book and those that are interested in learning more about advanced repairs and lathe use would do well in buying Steve's "Clock Repair Skills". His books have good pictures/illustrations and have clear large print. They are bound with plastic spiral binding, which allows for open book referral while at the work bench.
