When Michael Crawford discovers his bride brutally murdered in their wedding bed, he is forced to flee not only to prove his innocence but to avoid the deadly embrace of a vampire who has claimed him as her true bridegroom.

Joining forces with Byron, Keats, and Shelley in a desperate journey that criss-crosses Europe, Crawford desperately seeks his freedom from this vengeful lover who haunts his dreams and will not rest until she destroys all that he cherishes.

Told in the guise of a secret history, this tale of passion and terror brilliantly evokes the nineteenth century. The chilling horror and adventure blend to create a riveting romantic fantasy.

Powers doing what he does best here - taking historical events and weaving his story with fantastical elements around it. I think he does this better than anyone else in his field, and this novel is no exception. Having said that I found it a bit tough going in places and not as fluid as some other works of his such as "The Anubis Gates" or "Last Call". Plenty of enjoyable moments for Powers fans but not a book I would recommend if you have not read any of his books yet.

Wieder so enttäuschender Cover-Kauf.

5,0 von 5 Sternen A Historical Venue That Slowly Turns Horrific
Bewertet in den USA am1. April 2017
It is the Romantic Era in England. Dr. Michael Crawford stops at an inn the night before his marriage to the beautiful Julia. He and his friends have a typical bachelor party and on his way to bed, inebriated, he takes his fiance's wedding ring out of his pocket and slips on the finger of a statue of a woman. When he comes to the next morning, he rushes down to the yard but the statue is nowhere to be found. He buys a substitute ring from the innkeeper and rides on to his wedding. That night, he sleeps heavily after his honeymoon night with Julia. He awakes the next morning to a horrific sight. Julia has been murdered during the night and not just murdered but brutally torn apart. He flees the room in horror and as he realises that he is the prime suspect, flees England also.

He comes to discover that he is the victim of the Nephelim, a race of vampires and stone creatures that crave human interaction. He moves across Europe, helped by others in his same predicament. Some are like him, brought into the realm of the creature's desires by fate or a foolish act. Some seek the Nephelim out for their ability to become Muses and grant the victim marvelous powers of creation. As he moves about, he encounters famous poets such as John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron, all men desired by the nephelim. They started by seeking them out for their ability to help them write poetry but end by being willing to do anything to break free of their insidious powers. Crawford and his companion, who is Julia's twin sister, work with the men to break the control the vampire/Nephelims have over all their lives. Can they be successful?

Tim Powers is one of the legendary names of fantasy. He has won the Phillip K. Kick Memorial Award twice and the World Fantasy Award three times. His most accessible work, On Stranger Tides, was the basis for the highly successful Pirates Of The Caribbean movies. His trademark is lush language that outlines a historical venue that slowly turns horrific. His research of the history on which he bases his novels is supreme and the reader is totally absorbed in his narrative. I listened to this book over several weeks as I was on my daily walk and it was always a fascinating experience. This book is recommended for fantasy and horror readers.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Gothic Splendour!

a rollicking tale of romance, monsters and madness... the author's quill dancing dextrous and inspired across the lives of poets, priests and beasts... in turns daft, delightful, melancholic and beautiful... well worth lighting a candle, pouring a brandy, and having a quiet night in... dream deep...

4,0 von 5 Sternen Masterfully written; shamefully published
Bewertet in den USA am11. Juli 2021
I'm writing specifically about the Amazon Kindle edition of this book, which is full of formatting errors, inappropriate paragraph breaks (sometimes in the middle of a word) and miswordings, an altogether amateurish production unworthy of the writing, made all the more shameful in that it could have been prevented by a simple, thorough proofreading.

The story concerns an Englishman, a doctor, who is thrust unknowingly into a shadowy involvement with otherworldy beings. Everyone he encounters seems to know more about what is happening to him than he does, himself. His misfortune is our gain, as we get to unravel the twisted tales through his eyes.

In the course of his travels through England, France, the Swiss alps, we readers encounter such personages as John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron. Powers is unequaled at weaving historical personages into unlikely tales and making them seem all too likely in the process. He seems to shine, especially, in period pieces, lending immediacy through detail, and creating a chilling mood through understatement.

This is one of his best efforts, on par with Anubis Gates and Drawing the Dark. Which makes it all the more shameful that it has been so ill-handled by Amazon's so-called "publishing" staff. But for their hash-handed editing job, which looks like the efforts of an unpaid and barely literate high-schooler, this review would award it five stars. I urge you to avoid the Kindle edition and purchase a printed and bound version.

5,0 von 5 Sternen As Enticing as a Vampire's Kiss
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 21. Januar 2017
This was an impulse buy, I'd never heard of Tim Powers before, but I will definitely be reading more. I loved this - the whole reframing of Earth history through the magnifying glass of the romantic poets, it was brilliantly done. I love vampire fiction, and I love anything gothic, so it was the perfect book for me - but it was also a treatment of vampirism that I've never seen before. Another thing I loved was how I could easily see parallels between the vampire/human relationship and domestic abuse - how you hate the abuser and want to get away, but at the same time, there is that Stockholm Syndrome yearning for them when you finally do break away. So many sentences spoken by the victims of the vampires that could have come out of my own mouth.

I didn't find it slow-paced at all - I'm a huge fan of Victorian novels, so the pace felt comfortable, and I loved wallowing in the world the author created. Most importantly, the narration was unobtrusive and never once drew me out of the story (once I got the picture of Michael Crawford as Frank Spencer out of my head). The depiction of time and place felt authentic.

This is a very original take on vampire mythology and on the romantic poets, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I'll never look at statues and stones in quite the same way again.....

5,0 von 5 Sternen With the Trinity of the Romantic Poets as main players The Novel has to be Awesome
Bewertet in den USA am8. August 2011
One of the greatest things about the Romantic time period is that three of the greatest poets of that period (Keats, Shelley, & Byron) all knew each other and interacted with each other and even took inspiration from each other. Sometimes, particularly in the case of Lord Byron, his life overshadows his work, although his work is pure genuis. What if these poets actually got their inspiration from the same place? That's exactly the theme of Powers' novel.

The main protagonist is an English Physician named Michael Crawford who gets manipulated into a liasion with a lamia who ends up killing his wife. He is accused of the crime and thus must flee England. While in Europe he meets up with the three Romantic poets. First he meets Keats who is also under the influence of a lamia and is trying desperately to escape it. Next he meets Byron and Shelley who recognize like souls as being part of their group and Crawford becomes Byron's doctor for a while.

Of course all of this is just the beginning. We soon learn that The Nephelim have been influencing events for centuries and things are currently being led by an 800-year-old Hapsburg royal. Through this man the Austrians have taken over Venice and only the Carbonari seem to have the means to resist them. Of course eventually Crawford joins forces with the Carbonari to attempt to eradicate the Nephelim.

What was truly amazing was that Powers actually inserts the supernatural events seamlessly over the actual live of the poets. He did a wonderful job with that. Also the novel was a thrilling and fascinating read, although a little scary. Powers has an unusual voice in Science Fiction and is a joy to read!
