Informationen zum Autor
Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.
She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.
Sensationalist spin? No - Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all.
Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. Ocean's Gift is her first novel.

I love the modern form of speaking in Enchant as not only is it humorous but it allows you to relate to it too.
Not only is Enchant a retelling of Beauty and the Beast but it also has a few sneaky mentions of other fairy tales such as Aladdin and the Little Mermaid, which put a smile on my face. Also, I enjoyed the fact that it was more for an adult audience, which I didn't know at first, as it reminded me of Angela Carter's style of fairy tales (of whom I'm a huge fan of).
Furthermore, I loved the writing style; at first I felt that the chapters were quite short, as in it could have been more descriptive. However, after a while it fit nicely, the story seemed to just fly by until in no time, I realised I read it in one sitting.
Overall, I definitely recommend having a read. I will definitely be checking out Carlton's other works.
But I didn't like that an intelligent powerful witch doesn't recognize her own curse. A curse that should show the beastly side of the prince - who looked like a beast, but hadn't done anything wrong in his life.
I liked the interesting storyline, but can't give more than three stars.
The Beast: he looks into the cursed mirror and then what? How did he react, how did his subjects react, how did they come to function?
Lots of information missing that I would have found important for the story flow, and then at the end a completely unnecessary scene (at least the way it was told).
The narration style was more suitable for a childrens' fairytale than for adults, although some the events described were definitely not for children.
So - yes a nice if unrealistic plot based on the Beauty and the Beast tale, but not presented in a way I enjoyed. Sorry.
humble opinion, rape does not fit in a fairy tale (- 1 *).
It's not my first read from Demelza Carlton and I really love her writing
style. The plotline and the twists in it makes her new version of the well
known story unique.
The fact that a great enchantress like Belle/Zuleika not recognise her
own curse as long as she does, is almost unbelievable (- 1 *).
But nevertheless, I enjoyed reading this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I have reviewed Beauty and the Beast retellings before. I actually just wrote a review on another such retell a couple of days ago. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite stories of all time, and as such, my regard for retells of it has a very, very high threshold. I get so frustrated with retells that simply take a physically marred person and a aesthetically pleasing person and throw them together with some outside problem to solve and - bam - instant romance novel. That kind of nonsense is drivel and makes me wish I could turn back time and read something worthwhile instead. And, frankly, thanks to that glorious live action remake of the timeless tale that came out in 2017, the sheer volume of Beauty and the Beast retells seems to be in the thousands. So I will be honest, I approached Enchanted with no small amount of trepidation. I actually put off starting it for weeks, because I just was not up for the disappointment I was sure I would feel.
If you can't tell, this was my first experience with Demelza Carlton's work. Otherwise, I would not have felt any such trepidation.
Enchant is such a profound story. There are untold layers, minute details that add so much to the story. There was one scene that stands out vividly in my mind - and that is where Zuleika visits the village on Vardan's island and casts a small spell to see what is invisible to the naked eye. What she sees is a village full of people who show every sign of not having been able to see themselves or each other for a long time. Their clothes are stained and askew, hair is in disarray, and so forth. It's so easy to picture such a scene in my mind, it made me chuckle out loud.
Towards the end, there is a poignant scene with Zuleika where she goes behind Vardan's back and does something both heroic and foolhardy (no spoilers), and oh my gosh, that scene was very nearly my undoing. The prowess of Carlton as a writer had me so enthralled with the story at that point, I felt literally breathless as I raced through the pages to find out what would happen next. The moment was real, and right before me in my mind's eye. Only the very best writers can bring a scene to life like this.
Enchant was such a treat to read. Even my husband, observing my reading, got enjoyment from the book for the simple fact that I had my nose stuck in it for an entire day. While cooking, vacuuming, doing laundry - one hand on my task and one hand on my book. It was that good. It is that good. I will read and reread again and again. I'm not even prepared to move on to the next book in the series yet, because I'm still savoring this one.
