Blind Date with a Supervillain: Supervillain Romance Project Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 71 ratings

Juggling life as a superhero with college and a social life is hard, but Shawn Park, AKA Surge, feels he's killing it. Things look even brighter when he makes a connection with the sweet but shy new barista at his favorite coffee shop. Maybe a guy really can have it all ... but appearances can be deceiving.

Apparition just wants her supervillain father to be proud of her, and she'll do anything to accomplish that: even disguise herself as mild-mannered coffee shop employee Nikki to get close to the superhero he's stalking. However, between his charming smile and kind words, she finds herself hopelessly drawn to the good natured Shawn.

As the chemistry between Shawn and Nikki sizzles, the tension between Surge and Apparition grows. If he finds out the truth, they could be headed for something far more explosive than the average breakup.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet College-Age Romance

Like a typical college student, Shawn Park is busy balancing his studies, his internship, and his personal life. As an up-and-coming superhero, he’s also trying to keep his identity secret, at least for the time being. But Shawn's tendency to rush in and save the day is making that task a little more difficult. His latest act of kindness leads him to unknowingly falling head over heels for a supervillain. What will happen when he learns the truth? Can Shawn and Nikki find their happy ending? Or will their battles as Surge and Apparition keep them apart?

Find out in Blind Date with a Supervillain by H. L. Burke. This sweet romance novella is the first installment of the Supervillain Romance Project, a spin-off series in Burke’s DOSA-verse (Department of Superabled Universe). If you’re a fan of superhero stories with engaging plots, loveable characters, and valuable life lessons, this is a great series to get started with. I loved how this spin-off continues to highlight the value of redemption and second chances. Nikki is the victim of a verbally abusive father and has spent her life trying to please him, even to the extent of participating in various crimes. Still, she longs for someone to notice her and appreciate her despite her low self-worth. She struggles to find her place with her peers and doubts that she has any value despite her artistic talents. Her character is relatable and represents the universal need for love and acceptance.

Fortunately, she finds this in the compassionate Shawn Park. What I loved about this blossoming relationship is the way Shawn’s kindness reached the place of despair and longing in Nikki’s heart and planted the seed of hope. I loved watching her transformation as she started to believe that she could have a better future away from the limitations her father set for her. I also appreciated the message about basing a relationship on a healthy foundation. Through Shawn’s wisdom and caution, the author acknowledges the need for a healthy acceptance of self-worth before a relationship should be pursued. In this aspect, I loved how Shawn respected the advice of his father and gave Nikki additional space to grow.

With so many teens and young adults looking for love in all the wrong places, I appreciated how this book models a road to finding a healthy relationship. The story is fiction, of course, but is woven with adorable scenes, a bit of suspense, and difficult decision-making. I’d recommend this book to older teens and college-age readers (Nikki is 19 and Shawn is 22), but adult fans of the Supervillain Rehabilitation Series will enjoy this story too. Sensitive readers should be aware that Nikki’s father is verbally abusive throughout the book and it is indicated that he may have been physically abusive as well. There is mild violence in the battles between Supervillains and heroes, but no overly gory or graphic scenes.

Shawn Parker is going to college in College City. He goes and gets coffee ☕ at the coffee ☕ shop every morning. Nikki works at the coffee ☕ shop. They get friendly. Nikki's father is Mytherannt a master criminal out to kill Shawn. Her feelings for Shawn get in the way of helping her father leading to changes for everyone. I would recommend this series and author to 👍 readers of romantic mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 😀👒😡😮

This book cleverly melds a charming romantic comedy plot with a funny-but-tense superhero plot for a quick, entertaining read.

Apparition is a young villain sidekick, using illusion powers to help her domineering dad Mythcreant (love the names!) pull off lucrative heists before going underground till they need money again. She secretly wants to experience normal life, practice her drawing, maybe make some friends. Her father rarely lets her out of his sight ... until he wants to take down a new young hero, Surge. Unlike most DOSA heroes, Surge wants to keep his identity as Shawn Park secret so he can finish his training and college degree. But Mythcreant knows who he is and sets up Apparition as a barista in Shawn’s favorite coffee shop so she can befriend, then betray him. But he’s so nice and his dog is so cute!

Apparition is an interesting character—she has never had a chance to figure out who she is apart from her father and villainy. Her villain persona is sexy and confident, but her default is shy and awkward. She doesn’t have the tools to tell the difference between falling in love and a decent person simply being nice to her. I liked how the young people had serious, high-stakes secrets. Dating would cause real complications, to say the least! Their initial awkwardness comes across cute and genuine. Some twists toward the end were welcome surprises that I didn’t see coming but worked well.

I've been wanting to sample H.L. Burke's superhero stories for quite a while. SO happy I started with this one! I couldn't put it down unless life forced me to get up and do something else (the nerve). Can't wait to devour more of them now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Story (but No Blind Date)

I enjoyed this fun story. The characters are well-developed, and their adventure is interesting. My main problem with it is that the Korean-American character shows no sign of any sort of cultural background different from the white characters. There is no mention of Korean food, he doesn't speak Korean with his family, he doesn't refer to celebrating Korean holidays, he never does a single thing differently than the white characters - for all practical purposes, he is a white American with an Asian last name. Oh, there is one mention of a K-pop band, but that's it. However, he is a likable guy, and so is the female MC, and I enjoyed following their journeys. The only blind date is in the title, though, so don't pick up the book in the hopes of seeing what a blind date with a supervillain is like.
