Beta (Diaries of the Cwn Annwn Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

"I had failed my Alpha. I knew this, and mine was the penalty to pay, that I might never know the comfort of my Mate, of finding the other half of my soul. I might dream, of a beautiful white wolf, with eyes of green. I might dream that we ran together under the moonlight, but I would never know her. Or so I thought." "It was a letter that started it, from an old friend, a plea for help. A run in the Catskills. An encounter with a white wolf on Cwn Annwn territory. A cop. A Homicide Detective. Her family who saw her only as a marriage prize even in this modern age. But she was mine. Alix was mine. Woe betide any who thought to take her from me."

Bran Cadwgan is one of two Betas of the Cwn Annwn. He believed he would never be granted a Mate by the Goddess as penance for past mistakes, but discovers that he was wrong. Will he succeed in proving to both her family and his Mate that he is worthy of her sharing his life?

Alix Gosselin is the only daughter of the Gosselin Alpha and his mate. She was the "Gosselin Princess" growing up in an abusive home, until she fled first to attend boarding school and then for a career in law enforcement. Her parents had proven that the myth of a mate who would love and treasure you above all else was just that, a myth. Then, she encountered a biker whilst investigating a series of female disappearances in a suspected sex-trafficking ring. Her life would never be the same again. Alix wants to believe the story she is told by her biker, but she knows her father will not let her 'throw herself away' on a 'mere biker'.

Bran and Alix, both have preconceptions to overcome. Both of them will be faced with challenges. Will the growing bond between them be sufficient? Based on the legend of the Welsh Cwn Annwn, and incorporating Jo's love of myth and legend, Beta introduces a cast of Cwn Annwn, wolf shifter and human characters, weaving romance with the contemporary world. Dare you walk in our world?

Top review from India

I am not really a fan of werewolves and Vampires, but I don't hate them either. When I picked up this book I was slightly reluctant and was not sure if I will be able to finish it. But I have to give full credit to the author, who weaved an exciting story that kept me turning pages.
The story is pretty much straightforward and easy to follow, Mystical creatures doing superhero things and saving the humanity from the evils of humankind. But end of the day it's an interesting read. It kept me engaged on my 6-hour redeye and didn't let me catch a bit of much needed zzz's. Not recommended if you want to find some sleep.
Overall, I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an exciting and quick paced read.
There are sudden changes in POV's though, which you may or may not like.

The story continues with the Cwn Annwn of Alpha Gavril Negrescu. His betas, Bran and Owain find what has long been elusive to them amid the mysteries and dangers that are building. A string of young educated women missing, including the daughter of an old friend, and the threat of the evil members of the Gosselin pack. I’m looking forward to Book 3 to see what the outcome.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Redemption, Love, and Shifting Allegiances

In "Beta" (Diaries of the Cwn Annwn Book 2), the author, Kate Vincent, masterfully intertwines the enchanting lore of the Welsh Cwn Annwn with a riveting contemporary narrative, delivering a spellbinding tale of redemption, love and the complex dance between shifting allegiances.

The chemistry between Bran and Alix crackles with tension and promise, set against the backdrop of family expectations, societal norms, and a series of gripping challenges. Vincent skillfully navigates the characters' preconceptions and hurdles, building a palpable connection that tests the boundaries of loyalty and love.

The inclusion of wolf shifters and human characters adds depth to the story, painting a rich tapestry of a world where myth and reality collide.

"Beta" captivates with its seamless blend of romance, suspense, and the allure of ancient legends. Vincent's vivid storytelling pulls readers into a world where the line between fantasy and reality blurs, inviting them to walk alongside characters navigating the complexities of love and destiny.

Overall, "Beta" is a captivating journey that beckons readers to dare and immerse themselves in a world where love defies boundaries, destiny beckons, and the strength of the heart reigns supreme.

I really did enjoy the book. I had a hard time putting it down and stayed up far too long to finish it. This is one of the best shifter books I've read in a very long time. The characters were well developed and the world they inhabited as well. I don't think the cover does the story justice at all. But don't let that stop you from reading this one.

This is a good follow up to Alpha. One of the things I liked about Alpha was that is skipped through time, covering major historical events. For obvious reasons, this one could not do that, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t just as good. The book centres around the betas and initially has two storylines going that work well together. Part way through a third comes in that fits well with the other two rather than detracting from them. The characters are interesting and you want to read more about them

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from this author!

Think I liked this book more than the others I've read from the series. Love that the pack are far more than mere shifters and Bran's pain was palpable as he blamed himself for the wrongs of the past. Loved the prologue. An insightful, heartbreaking read in itself that threaded its way through the rest of the book. The author's style is interesting and very descriptive. Could actually feel the tension between Bran and Alix as they realised they were mates. Their reisistance was futile and beautifully cemented. Lots of twists to this tale of good v evil while Bran and Alix try to unravel the disapperance of several missing women. A great read, full of passion and romance.
