Payson Apartment Renter's Guide
Payson Apartment Renter's Guide
Overview
"But save your energy your journey here is far from over / Come the sunrise we'll descend through judgment valley / And weigh your worth before her majesty the Verde River" -- From "Green Valley" by Puscifer
Payson is a small city in the mountains about an hour north of Phoenix, making it the perfect getaway for people who need a break from the constant sunlight of Central Arizona. If you are considering joining the 15,301 residents who live here (at least at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census), it's time to get started on your search for an apartment or house to rent in Payson.
Both buying and renting a home here costs a little more than in the rest of Arizona, probably because the residents of this state are willing to pay a premium for cooler weather! The temperatures here are about 20 degrees cooler than in Central Arizona, so can you blame people for flocking to the city? No, but you can prepare ahead of time by looking for rental housing during the fall or winter rather than in the summer, when Payson is a particularly popular spot

Searching for a Home in Payson
Both buying and renting a home here costs a little more than in the rest of Arizona, probably because the residents of this state are willing to pay a premium for cooler weather! The temperatures here are about 20 degrees cooler than in Central Arizona, so can you blame people for flocking to the city? No, but you can prepare ahead of time by looking for rental housing during the fall or winter rather than in the summer, when Payson is a particularly popular spot.
Whether you are looking for a 1 bedroom apartment or checking out large rental houses, come prepared with pay stubs and your checkbook so you can put down a deposit. This is especially important if you're looking for furnished apartments, since you're basically looking for a needle in a haystack in Payson.
Payson Neighborhoods
Payson features a few neighborhoods that vary when it comes to cost, amenities, and types of homes. This is a summary of just some of the places you can move to in Payson.
Oxbow Estates: The most desirable neighborhood, it's on the western edge of Payson and has a suburban feel, with mostly detached homes, mobile homes, and townhouses. This area is near Payson Country Club and Payson Rodeo Grounds, so there's plenty of opportunity to enjoy the cool weather here.
Gisela / Jake's Corner: This community takes up most of Payson and sits along the eastern part of the city. It's pretty remote, with mostly single-family homes and mobile homes with lots of land, so this area isn't exactly walkable unless you want a nature hike. It does feature Mazatzal Hotel and Casino, though.
Bear Flat / Washington Park: This is another remote area of Payson. It sits to the north by State Route 260, which makes it close to Heber-Overgaard, Show Low, Pinetop, and other cute little northern Arizona cities that see tons of snow in the winter.
Payson Living
When you move here, be prepared to take advantage of the awesome weather and location. You'll live by the Tonto National Forest, so camping, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing are all popular pastimes. Of course, there's always the rodeo, which you just can't miss as an Arizonan!
When you get the itch to shop, head downtown to Main Street to peruse art galleries, antique stores, and cafes. Payson also hosts an annual Auto Show and even a State Fiddler's Contest every year. Basically, it doesn't get much more friendly and adorable than this city.
