"Lyrical and spellbinding." (Marieke Njikamp, number-one New York Times best-selling author)
Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, Hafsah Faizal's We Hunt the Flame - first in the Sands of Arawiya series - is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.
People lived because she killed. People died because he lived.
Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya - but neither wants to be.
War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds - and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

A Stunning Book!
This was SO good. I loved every second of it and am highly anticipating the sequel that will be coming out this year! I am on my way to preorder it right now!!! If you like enemies to lovers, characters learning to accept their flaws, and a fresh take on fantasy, this is definitely the book for you!
WE HUNT THE FLAME was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019, so I was super excited when it was an Indigo Book Box! I was so thrilled that I got a lot of extra perks (like candles and bookmarks) as part of the reading experience for this one. But as is the typical in my life, it wasn't until I got the audiobook that I was able to actually take the time to listen.
The writing is absolutely exquisite and I found myself fully immersed in the world. I was able to picture everything around me and felt as though I was right there alongside the characters as they were traversing along and finding the darkness. I liked both of the perspectives: Zafira, the Huntress and Nasir, the Assassin. I knew from the first second we met both of them that I would enjoy their banter and watching them fall in love.
The first little bit is hard to get into: it is a lot of world building and demonstrating what the world is currently like, but I loved it. When you take this into perspective with the last third of the book (which moves very fast!!!), it seems like a weird juxtaposition for a book, even a first novel. But that didn't detract from my reading experience.
I loved watching the characters come into themselves and also grow together to understand different perspectives. I also really enjoyed watching them fall for each other and realize what that actually meant.
If you haven't already read this, WE HUNT THE FLAME should be at the top of your to be read pile for 2020, especially before the sequel hits shelves later this year!

Story and romance were pretty disappointing
Warning: Kinda spoilers
Dean’s character felt like a throwaway to cause drama later down the road. Conflict could have easily been created using other vehicles, like focusing on creating actual friendships and bonds between the main cast of characters.
The character of the lion was really weird and kind of inconsistent. Overall really lame. It would have been nice to go over more of his history before throwing in the character and him not really being menacing at all.
The romance between the leads was really weak. They could have set up something really nice, but the leads spend too much time self-pitying to create a proper bond. They just randomly feel attracted to one another and it really makes no sense. The author should have spent more time developing their friendship (or at least a bond of trust) for their love to feel realistic. As it stands, it just feels like the characters are lustful, not actually in love.
The leads are also very 1-dimensional. They don’t really have personalities outside of being sad. And I’m all here for dark and brooding, but it really prevented any of the characters from developing relationships and it made the outer and inner dialogue really repetitive.
The world is cool though.

Felt a little cliché
Steve West did an amazing job like he always do. The femal3 narrator was ok but some part where remade in the middle of paragraph which made the narration shaky. The story was too cliché for me and the world to simple. Love the author writting style tho.

Excellent! With few hiccups!
I think because of my ability to hyper focus on a specific detail I got frustrated early on because every time the narrator said Zafira it sounded like it had been dubbed in later? Like the quality wasn’t the same? HOWEVER! I enjoyed the book and the banter!! And the slow build enemies to lovers.
The first act felt a bit long at first BUT then you realize the importance later, and then it’s just like ohhhhhhh that was why.
