Histoire
When Fiona Dunn is approached in a bar by a man who claims he's the devil, she figures it's just some kind of postmodern-slash-ironic pickup line. But a few drinks in, he offers her a wish in exchange for her immortal soul, and in addition Fiona must perform a special favor for him whenever the time comes. Fiona finds the entire matter so absurd that she agrees. Bad idea. Fiona soon discover that she really was talking to the devil incarnate.

Dark but engaging
Évalué le: 2024-05-29
I don't know how this book does not have more reviews! The story was very dark, but kept me hooked. The premise; Characters trade what they wanted most in the world for a 'favour'. A dark favour. An evil, ripped from the headlines favour. Of course, they don't realize how horrific this favour will truly be when they sign up...
A little club of the damned meet regularly, and we get to witness their demise.
Narration was excellent.
If you dark novels, or even if you are looking for something a little different, give this one a listen. 5 stars.

New friends Sam, Margaret and Diana are thrilled to be getting out of the city for a girls’ weekend - they’ve bonded over their messy divorces, and every mile on the odometer feels like another step towards putting their exes in the past. But when car trouble halfway into their trip strands them in the most unlikely of mountain towns, they come face-to-face with the hurts and betrayals they were so desperate to leave behind. When Diana doesn't return home after a night out, Sam and Margaret's search for her reveals just how little they know about their friend.

Better than I expected
Évalué le: 2024-05-28
I bought this title on sale, mostly as I enjoy listening to one of the narrators. I listen to a lot of this genre, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was totally listenable, kept me interested and engaged, And much better than the last two full price "thrillers" that I had used credits on, prior to this one (I haven't been able to finish either of those).
I listened to it in just two days. Would recommend.

Cassie Forrest isn't surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

The best 'zombie' dystopian series
Évalué le: 2024-03-27
This is the best character-led 'zombie' series out there. And I have read a lot of them.
A group of ordinary people vs the zombie apocalypse (and the monsters that some people become in times of distress). Great character development, and plot. This first book of the series took me a little to get into, but I am sooo glad I gave it a chance, it was easy to fall in love with the cast.
It is so refreshing to read an apocalyptic story that isn't based on the typical army/prepper/alpha male trope. This story does have kick-ass male characters, but more relatable than the military man that seems to star in almost all zombie books.
Julia Whelan, as narrator, does an amazing job with the different voices, and personalities of each individual.
I would give it more than 5 stars, if I could. I strongly recommend you give this series a listen!

Don't do it!!!!
This book is complete drivel. The story is unrealistic, the narration is awful...
I listen to a lot of 'quit lit' and read independent addiction memoirs on Kindle. I am also a fan of fiction in this genre. But with a plot. This is none of these things. It is a far fetched story about an alcoholic mom, who is whiny and unlikeable. There is no hard rock bottom. There is nothing relatable. We don't even get introduced properly to her children, or their ages, etc, there is just no story here. The woman goes to church every Sunday, teaches Sunday school. Is barely messing up in her life. Joins AA. Fights to prove she is an alcoholic. This summary makes the book sounds like it has an interesting story line. Don't be fooled, it does not.
Try instead reading the Lela Fox series on Kindle.
The worst thing I have listened to in a long time.
Audible won't refund my credit. But at least I hope this saves you yours!

Maybe my Fav in the series

I struggled with the start of this series. While I liked alcoholic Gus, it was not super eventful. But everything has led up to now. New kick ass characters, storylines and vilians!
I have sped through book 4 and 5, and I can't wait to continue six! But seriously I listened to this one in a weekend. You will not be disappointed!

A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later.

Not my favourite Karin Slaughter novel
Évalué le: 2023-09-23
I have read many Karin Slaughter books, and this was not my favourite. Some slight spoilers ahead.
It was brutal and the depiction of rape as pleasurable was insulting. I also knew who had done it right away.
This was my first read of her grant county series, and although I didn’t enjoy this one, I may give it another go, as I do like some of her most recent work.

Just ok
Évalué le: 2023-06-22
This book has great reviews, and therefore I was really looking forward to it. Overall I was disappointed. The characters actions weren’t very believable at times (much of the time).
The author left the book very predictable, no twists and turns here. However it is all wrapped up nicely and all characters POVs are explained. I wouldn’t say I couldn’t stop listening, it didn’t draw me in the way Paula Hawkins books do.
I do have to give props to the narrator. Overall she was pleasant to listen to. Many people complained about a couple of her voices (Hannah and the grandmother) which are pretty bad, but they have such little dialogue, it really didn’t take away from the overall performance.

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age 11. In the years that followed, he would regularly smoke pot, do cocaine and ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Even so, he felt like he would always be able to quit and put his life together whenever he needed to. It took a violent relapse one summer in California to convince him otherwise.

Memoir
Évalué le: 2023-01-19
It was an interesting memoir, although It seemed to end rather abruptly.
I was sure as I was listening that it was the author reading it. That means, to me, that the narrator did a great job.
As someone in recovery I always enjoy listening to others experiences, and this one did not disappoint. It wasn’t preachy, as some go. It could be considered triggering I suppose, but I’m at the stage where I want to hear it all. Use your own discretion.
