I really struggled to finish this book due to the portrayal of many of the women depicted in the story. From disapproving, manipulative, hysterical mothers, to self-centred, jealous women betraying one another, to women begging and manipulating men to love them, I came close to returning this book. I usually look forward to World War II historical fiction that enlightens readers to the heroic work done by women in the Resistance. Overall women did not fare well in this book.

I imagine the case itself was quite interesting however I couldn’t force myself to go any further than the few first chapters. I found the performance flat and the initial presentation tedious. I really pushed to get to a place where I might feel differently but finally surrendered and returned the book.
