Mourning the death of his father and gravely injured at the hands of the English, Jamie Fraser finds himself running with a band of mercenaries in the French countryside, where he reconnects with his old friend, Ian Murray. It’s always a delight to get more of the story if Jamie’s beginnings/life. And as always Diana grips you with her story. A delightful little tie but of extra info that adds to the depth of the characters.

Great Preface to Outlander, perfect place to start or circle back to.
Excellent character development and the reader was perfect at setting the tone with regional dialects and slight variations between characters. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Different
I just finished all 9 big books and decided to read all small novellas now. This was an interesting story, great narration but it just felt like too short of a story so many unanswered questions, glad I listened to it though. On a note there is a very well described rape within the pages and I do think there should be a warning to potential listeners.

my favorite side novel so far
I have enjoyed the shorter novels of the series, specifically the ones retailing John's story but this one was so short, filled with adventure and humor I could have listened for so much more.
The narration is perfect I could easily differentiate the characters which for me is important because mind tends to wander and come back to the story
