Story
Great North Road is a standalone science fiction adventure from Peter F. Hamilton, the author of The Night's Dawn trilogy. When attending a Newcastle murder scene, Detective Sidney Hurst finds a dead North family clone. Yet none has been reported missing. And in 2122, 20 years ago, a North clone billionaire was horrifically murdered in the same manner on the tropical planet of St Libra. So if the murderer is still at large, was Angela Tramelo wrongly convicted?

I realised I only write reviews (2 so far) when an audiobook has irritated the hell out of me. This may make me appear to be one of those people who are sent to leave horrible reviews. This is not the case; some books just irritate the hell out of me and make me wonder why I finished them when I don’t normally exhibit masochistic tendencies.
This book did not irritate the hell out of me. This is me trying to show some balance. Basically I love Peter Hamilton since he writes complex intelligent sci fi. Toby Longworth narrates his work very well as does John Lee. Whenever I have survived a near death audiobook experience, I turn to Peter Hamilton to soothe my irritation. (I’m tactfully ignoring his overuse of enzyme bonded concrete in a previous book.)
So Peter Hamilton does not write easy books but his work is absorbing and my brain thanks him for it.

Repetition Hell
Reviewed: 13-10-18
I really enjoyed book 1. Book 2 was direly boring. There is a good tale in there but it was completely and utterly smothered by constant repetition.
Honestly, I would have returned it had I not bought it on a BOGOF Audible deal. I got to the last hour before I simply couldn’t take it any more and hoppity skipped my skimming way to the end.
If you enjoyed the first book, keep that warm glowy nostalgia and don’t brave this one - your sanity is at stake.

Story
In the mid-23rd century, Darwin, Australia, stands as the last human city on Earth. The world has succumbed to an alien plague, with most of the population transformed into mindless, savage creatures. The planet’s refugees flock to Darwin, where a space elevator—created by the architects of this apocalypse, the Builders—emits a plague-suppressing aura.

What would have made The Darwin Elevator better?
Not having the female scientist be stunningly beautiful and prone to weepy moments.
What could Jason M. Hough have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not having the female scientist be stunningly beautiful and prone to weepy moments.
What does Simon Vance bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Simon Vance did a good job with this book.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Er......it is what it is....a sci fi adventure that had potential but just kept jarring me.
Any additional comments?
I would start engaging with the story, only to be irritatingly hauled back by (you know what's coming, don't you?) the stunningly beautiful scientist who was prone to weepy moments! Did you know that her mother taught her to value her intellect more than her beauty? That makes it all okay then, doesn't it? I won't be listening to the remainder of this trilogy but hey.....I didn't send it back for refund and I did finish it!
