Story
June 1940. As World War Two rages, Daphne Devine remains in London, performing each night as assistant to stage magician Jonty Trevelyan, aka the Grand Mystique. Then the secret service call. For, aware of Hitler's belief in the occult, the war office has set up a hidden cohort to exploit this quirk in the enemy's chain of command. Daphne and Jonty find themselves far from the glitz and glamour of the theatre, deep inside the lower levels of Wormwood Scrubs prison. Here, they join secret ranks of occultists, surrealists, and other eccentrics co-opted to the war effort.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 20-10-24
I really looked forward to this book being released and was really disappointed. Having read her series that I was riveted to I knew it would be good but I was wrong. I put it down and tried again but it was no good. The story was bitty and the characters didn’t have depth. Sadly it has put me off buying anything else from the author. The truth is I expected a follow up of the Essex Witch series as I didn’t think that it had finished. I wasted my money.

Story
One Sunday morning, the outspoken speaker of the House of Commons steps out of his front door only to be crushed under a mountain of citrus fruit. Bizarre accident or something more sinister? The government needs to know because here's a man whose knowledge of parliament’s biggest secret could put the future of the government at stake. It should be the perfect case for Bryant and May and the Peculiar Crimes Unit, but unfortunately one detective is in hospital, the other is missing and the staff have all been dismissed.

I am slowly collecting all the books and I confess to listening to them more than once. They are atmospheric and the reader makes it even more so. It is a shame they are only three hours long yet the charge is the same as others that are triple the time.

Story
“Sam, could you do me a favor?” Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

This book was not my choice it was my daughters but dipped in and was hooked. It was never boring and it was written from an angle I would not have thought about. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the American legal system and the way it works. It made me think differently about the people who defend wrong’uns and why.

Having grown up in northern Europe I remember the mixtures of main religion and paganism and so this book was very disappointing to me. I did not realise that it was mainly based for America had I known this I don’t think I would have chosen this book.

Story
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, she just thinks he has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realises. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published it would ruin lives - so there are a lot of people who might want to silence him.
