Story
It's the following Thursday. Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He's made a big mistake, and he needs her help. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster and a very real threat to his life. As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds, too? Well, wouldn't that be a bonus? But this time, they are up against an enemy who wouldn't bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians.

Too twee for me
Reviewed: 29-09-21
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Richard's first book and pre-ordered with pleasure. The narration by Lesley Manville is really very good.
But the plot. The characters. Just too much saccharine for my ears.
A lazy plot involving Elizabeth's past - too obvious for words.
A lazy plot involving a vulnerable pensioner being attacked and the revenge they took - even more obvious.
I'm of a pensionable age and enjoyed the first story of some people in a retirement village making mischief, but this was just too much to bear. I won't be buying the next instalment, unless I've forgotten everything I've just written.
Too twee for me.

The definitive account of the O. J. Simpson trial, The Run of His Life is a prodigious feat of reporting that could have been written only by the foremost legal journalist of our time. First published less than a year after the infamous verdict, Jeffrey Toobin's nonfiction masterpiece tells the whole story, from the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman to the ruthless gamesmanship behind the scenes of "the trial of the century".

Absolutely captures the Simpson trial from start to finish - may be a familiar story line to those who watched "The People Vs OJ Simpson" but with all the details and less of the drama.
The only better reference point would be "OJ - Made In America", but that and this compliment each other and should both be seen/heard.
I enjoyed this immensely.

The first nine months of Donald Trump's term were stormy, outrageous - and absolutely mesmerising. Now, thanks to his deep access to the West Wing, best-selling author Michael Wolff tells the riveting story of how Trump launched a tenure as volatile and fiery as the man himself. In this explosive audiobook, Wolff provides a wealth of new details about the chaos in the Oval Office.

The unvarnished truth about the Trump presidency and the people attached to it.
Mostly told through Steve Bannon (who has not disputed a single syllable - just some context) it lays bare the terrifying ineptitude of the President and his family.
But such is the desire of people to be "inside", they allow a dysfunctional narcissist to lay waste to the reputation of the USA.
And while this book may not end the Trump presidency, it has most certainly finished Steve Bannon's attempt to be the leader of the alt-right.

Story
The battle for Stalingrad became the focus of Hitler and Stalin's determination to win the gruesome, vicious war on the eastern front. The citizens of Stalingrad endured unimaginable hardship; the battle, with fierce hand-to-hand fighting in each room of each building, was brutally destructive to both armies. But the eventual victory of the Red Army, and the failure of Hitler's Operation Barbarossa, was the first defeat of Hitler's territorial ambitions in Europe and the start of his decline.

A long, detailed and intricate history of the battle of Stalingrad. Put simply, this is probably the best book ever written about WW2. I read the book many years ago and was interested to see how the audio book compared. Thanks to the excellent narration, it is still the best out there. I would guess that anyone interested in WW2 has already heard this, but if you haven't, get it today. You won't regret it.

Story
Lyndon Baines Johnson was a man of great ambition and enormous greed, both of which, in 1963, would threaten to destroy him. In the end, President Johnson would use power from his personal connections in Texas and from the underworld and from the government to escape an untimely end in politics and to seize even greater power. President Johnson, the thirty-sixth president of the United States, was the driving force behind a conspiracy to murder President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. In The Man Who Killed Kennedy, you will find out how and why he did it. Political consultant, strategist, and Libertarian Roger Stone has gathered documents and used his firsthand knowledge to construct the ultimate tome to prove that LBJ was not only involved in JFK's assassination, but was in fact the mastermind. With 2013 being the fiftieth anniversary of JFK's assassination, this is the perfect time for The Man Who Killed Kennedy to be available to readers. The research and information in this book is unprecedented, and as Roger Stone lived through it, he's the perfect person to bring it to everyone's attention.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt?
Reviewed: 24-09-17
A compelling and fascinating dissection of the JFK assassination. As well as dissecting the available (Not destroyed) evidence it takes a forensic look into who wanted JFK dead and who profited from his death. It becomes clear that only one man could sit at the centre of the web, and that was the man who inherited the greatest prize of all - the White House itself. Does this book prove the case beyond reasonable doubt? Listen and decide yourself , you'll certainly enjoy the trial whatever you decide.

This had the potential to be a good story, but by half way through was obvious and merely a drag to get to the end of. I was most disappointed. The narration was ok, but I expect the terrible accents will annoy most listeners. I will certainly not be buying the proposed next in the "series".
