The plot, the slow burn, the narration, the spice. All perfect! Stumbled across this on TikTok and it did not disappoint.

I had high hopes for this but as someone who has actually heard a Scottish person because I live in the U.K. the dreadful accent is too much so I had to abandon.

Takes a while but then you’re hooked!
Reviewed: 22-08-22
This is one book you genuinely don’t want to finish. It took me a while to get past the sometimes strange cadence of the narrator and the jolting of the first part. But then you realise it’s all part of the rhythm of the story. Very clever Schwab, very clever. Beautiful story. Leaves you feeling bereft.

Story
I'm Jen Brister, stand-up comedian, middle-aged adolescent and, more recently, a mum. But not that mum - I'm the other one. Confused? Let’s back up a bit. Two years ago, my partner (a woman - we're not solicitors) gave birth to twins. Like every new parent, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. Add ‘gay’ and ‘non-biological’ to the mix and what do you get? Not a weird box of detergent, but a panicked beige lesbian desperately googling, ‘Will my babies love me?’ at 3 a.m. This is a book for any parent who feels they don’t fit the mould of a traditional 2.4 family.

Hooks you in, then lets you down

Interesting and engaging listen but the lead voice grated.
Reviewed: 24-08-19
Very engaging at the beginning despite awful “general American ” accent. Would have been less distracting if Audible had engaged someone with better accent skills as it never settled in.
The story began to wane during the middle but then recovered for a fairly solid ending. Suitably creepy but could have been tightened up and the very last bit was too clichéd.

Alan Cumming grew up in the grip of a man who held his family hostage, someone who meted out violence with a frightening ease, who waged a silent war with himself that sometimes spilled over onto everyone around him. That man was Alan's father, Alex Cumming. Alex was the dark, enigmatic heart of Cumming family life. But he was not the only mystery. Alan's maternal grandfather, Tommy Darling, had disappeared to the Far East after the Second World War.

Gripping story, well paced with excellent plot twists. The narration is grating though. The men's voices are strange and too similar to each other, they jar and distract from the story. The child voices are awful, totally unnecessary. And over the top.

Story
A brand-new collection of Caitlin's award-winning Times columns plus three major new pieces exclusive to this book - one of which is Caitlin's Moranifesto for a better world. As with Moranthology, Caitlin introduces every piece and weaves her writing together into a brilliant, seamless book. And, similarly to her last collection, Moranifesto is a characteristically fun and witty look at the news, celebrity culture and society.

It's an important listen. This book is important to all humans, not just the women! It's beautifully written; heart breaking in places, hilarious in others. It's a meaningful read.
Neary's US accent is a bit cringe worthy in places and grates as does her supposition that Leicester is Brummy. It really isn't, I know if you live in the south you think it is, but it really isn't!! Moran's writing is electric. Moranifesto is a fantastic follow up to her previous books and needs to be read/heard.
