Historia
Angie, 6, and sister Polly, 4, are utterly distraught when they arrive to stay with foster carer Cathy Glass. Their older half-sister Ashleigh has accused their father of rape, and the two young sisters have been removed from home to keep them safe. Cathy tries to comfort the girls, but they are inconsolable. They just want their mummy and daddy, who they love dearly. The girls appear to have been well looked after, but as they settle and start to talk of life at home, it becomes clear something is badly wrong.

I Knew It!
Revisado: 05-31-23
This listen was a real “page-turner,” but I had a sense early on where the story was headed. It is sad and horrifying how easy it is to destroy a family by making premature judgments. Whatever you do, avoid the foster care system! It is like chewing gum stuck on your shoe—hard to be rid of.

Historia
In 1850 in Massachusetts, Whittaker House stood as a stop on the Underground Railroad. It’s where two freedom seekers, Little Annie and Clementine, hid and perished. Whittaker House still stands, and Little Annie and Clementine still linger, their dreams of freedom unfulfilled. Now a fashionably distressed vacation rental in the Berkshires, Whittaker House draws seekers of another kind: Black women who only appear to be free.

Too Confusing by far!
Revisado: 05-15-23
This story moved back and forth from the present to mid 19th C. Many, many characters came and went, including an array of restive spirits who interacted with 21st C visitors. I believe in believing in ghosts but this stretched credibility too far for my true-seeking preferences. The narration was superlative!

Historia
Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

Historia
Everyone from Wakarusa, Indiana, remembers the infamous case of January Jacobs, who was discovered in a ditch hours after her family awoke to find her gone. Margot Davies was six at the time, the same age as January—and they were next-door neighbors. In the twenty years since, Margot has grown up, moved away, and become a big-city journalist. But she’s always been haunted by the feeling that it could’ve been her. And the worst part is, January’s killer has never been brought to justice.

One of the Best!
Revisado: 04-15-22
Alexander McCall Smith is not only an accomplished author; he has many other abilities in the field of music and medicine. His stories are charming as are his characters. Although I’m unfamiliar with the language of Botswana, I believe he has captured its cadence through the voices of those who tell their stories. Now, I wish only to visit this country for which McCall Smith has so much admiration. Will I be able to find a 5-star virtual YouTube tour!

Historia
By 1920, the movies had suddenly become America's new favorite pastime and one of the nation's largest industries. Never before had a medium possessed such power to influence; yet Hollywood's glittering ascendancy was threatened by a string of headline-grabbing tragedies - including the murder of William Desmond Taylor, the popular president of the Motion Picture Directors Association, a legendary crime that has remained unsolved until now.

Like Hollywood, TINSELTOWN has everything!
Revisado: 01-01-22
It includes the history of an era and the people whose lives exemplified the American Dream that created it, Adolf Zuchor, Marcus Loew and Will Hays to name just three. It includes legends of the Silver Screen, with their triumphs and tragedies, mayhem and unsolved mystery murder. A great book for listening!

Frightfully Violent in Parts, but. . .
Revisado: 10-12-21
An interesting novel concerning a few people who fought to establish unions and improve the labor conditions of abysmally treated workers, in the early 20th century. In the end, it was a good book but I almost gave it up because of the violence.

Historia
Jenn Corbin appeared to have it all: two dear little boys, a posh home in one of the upscale suburbs of Atlanta, expensive cars, a plush houseboat, and a husband, Dr. Bart Corbin, a successful dentist, who was tall, handsome, and brilliant. But gradually their seemingly idyllic life together began to crumble. Bart was distraught and Jenn seemed disenchanted. Then, just a few weeks before Christmas 2004, Jenn was found dead with a bullet in her head, an apparent suicide.
