Aunt Dimity Deserves Better
Revisado: 01-26-20
I own most of this charming series in hardcover and love the books. I was so excited to find them on Audible and looked forward to revisiting some of my beloved characters.
Imagine my disappointment when I heard the robotic, flat narration. There are odd pauses in the middle of sentences, really bad accents, and total lack of warmth and emotion.
I can't believe anyone thought this narrator was a good choice for anything other than a copy machine user's manual.
Seriously, when one character talks about his mother's death and awkward childhood, the narrator interprets this section as if she were reading an ingredient list from a can of condensed soup.
The narrator has stripped all the warmth, all the charm, all the interest from this story and rendered it flat and sad. The electronic voice on my car's GPS is more interesting to listen to.
This series of books in print is the type of book you want to snuggle up with on a rainy day and get lost in.... the audio version is uninteresting and hard to finish. This narrator is a huge insult to Nancy Atherton's work.

I'm Enjoying this Series
Revisado: 07-25-19
I am really enjoying this series and am currently in the middle of reading this installment.
The narration is excellent, the characters are complex and believable and the main characters are well developed. The mysteries also keep my mind interested and engaged... all the wonderful hallmarks of a great read.
I tend to binge "read" series on Audible and mystery writers tend to get a bit predictable after a while. Ms. Griffiths keeps me guessing and I am looking forward to her next book.
A note to the editors of this particular book: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the author of "Hound of the Baskerville," not Sherlock Holmes. I had to put the book down a while after hearing this little tidbit narrated because the error distracted me so much from the story. I got over it and continued on with the highly enjoyable read.

An artist, writer, and colleague of the revered George Gershwin, Dorothy Heyward enjoyed the greatest moments of her life at Folly....

I've been enjoying this series, but...
Revisado: 09-15-18
I've been listening to the Lowcountry Tales this summer and as much as I love Dorothea Benton Frank's stories, I don't recommend reading them back to back. They all start to sound the same.
In most of these books the main character is living in either New York or New Jersey, with Low Country roots. She is usually married to a complete, horrendous jerk or has recently gotten out of a relationship with a jerk ... which sends her back home to the Low Country. There's a contentious relationship with a parental figure, an obnoxious in-law or rival, and somebody is bound to get cancer somewhere along the way.
Even with these common threads and story lines, I find the books to be enjoyable and they keep me interested. They're great to listen to while I am working on chores around the house. What usually ends up bugging me are the narrators of this series. There need to be proof-listeners! In an early book, one narrator horribly mangles the pronunciation of "Edisto." Sometimes the southern accents are really bad. Robin Miles does a fair job with the accent (it's not great) but somebody needed to catch a big error in her reading that had me laughing.
What she said on the recording was "attracted like fillings to a magnet" - what I am sure was written was "attracted like filings to a magnet." There's a big difference between fillings and filings. Fillings are not magnetic... and if they are, you need to have a serious talk with your dentist!
Anyway, maybe I'm picky, but I am a professional writer and even when I am listening to instead of reading a book, I find myself correcting errors mentally and they distract me from the story being told.
I will continue reading books in this series, the stories are good and I love how the author weaves characters from previous books back into the series. It's like hearing from old friends and finding out how they're doing. I am taking a break for a while so I'll stop mentally comparing all the similar themes and story lines.

Major suckage
Revisado: 02-20-17
I love books. This narrative almost made me hate them. This is a terrible, disjointed thing. It has my interest in the first chapters, then lost it completely as we moved into furthet, more torturous chapters. If the afterlife is really like this. I urge you all to seek imortality.
What a load of over inflated tripe!

I'm willing to suspend belief, but....
Revisado: 10-13-14
Would you try another book from Dee Davis and/or Ross Pendleton?
Probably not.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Hopefully someone who is more skilled at character development!
What about Ross Pendleton’s performance did you like?
He did okay with the material he was given. It's hard to bring the characters to life when the author can't be bothered to give them personalities.
Could you see Everything in Its Time being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
This book would need an entire rewrite before going to the screen.
Any additional comments?
I had great hopes for this book and really wanted to like it. It had a couple of my favorite themes - time travel and historical Scotland. This was a poorly crafted story. We know nothing about the the hero and heroine before they're banging away like bunnies. Are we really to believe that a woman, who has never slept with anyone in her life, upon waking in a strange environment, would really jump into bed with some random guy without even getting his name first? The two characters had no real bond other than sex. Really, who pines for a one night stand for eight years?
And the use of clan tartans didn't start happening until the 1700s. There were plaids in the 1400s, but they weren't clan specific.
Anyway, this just felt more like a school girl's sexual fantasy than a novel. It was just poorly developed story line between sex scenes and it would have been SO MUCH better if it had been fleshed out a bit more.
