I am a huge fan of historical mysteries in a variety of time periods, and this is destined to become a favorite. Set in the early days of WWII England, at the beginning of the Blitzkrieg, Churchill is building his arsenal to defend against and successfully defeat the Nazi war machine. Not all battles will be fought on the battlefield, and Evelyn Redfern just may have the skillset needed in the war of and on information. These characters are intelligent and dedicated, and even though Evelyn is headstrong, she isn't given to histrionics or TSTL moments. I cannot wait to see what adventures await Evelyn and David.

I thought Book #3 was a rollercoaster ride, but it pales in comparison to this book. I still love this series, but my heart hurts right now. Every book provides a new level of complexity in both plot and the lives of these characters. Electra is smart, savvy, strong, and yet relatably vulnerable. Gabriel has depths to plumb, but he is one tough nut to crack. It will take me a while to get over the emotions this story invoked, and I desperately need the next book in the series sooner than later.

Wow! This book is like riding the rollercoaster to the highest pinnacle and then plummeting toward the ground at break-neck speed and loving every minute of it. Ms. Weaver manages to bring the terror, the hardships, and the unsung heros of England during WWII, including the Blitzkrieg, German spies, and upheaval on the home front to life while drawing readers into the lives of her characters. Electra and Gabriel are wonderful characters, and I am waiting with baited breath for an actual romance between the two that seems promising but is moving at a glacial pace. Would begging help? No matter, I am invested in these characters and cannot wait for their next adventure.

I love this series. Set in 1930s England, Amory and Milo are one of my favorite sleuthing couples, the perfect combination of sophistication and edgy romance, not to mention investigative skills. I read a lot of mysteries, but the twist in this book when all the parties are gathered in a very Agatha Christie-ish scene is a stunner. I cannot wait until the next book.

Another fun visit with Cleo, Harry, and everyone at the Mayfair, This time Cleo not only has to identify a murderer, but first she has to prove there was a murder. The suspects and clues abound, and this one took me totally by surprise. It was nice to see Cleo seemingly more comfortable working with Harry, but I missed the round table discussions with the Mayfair staff and Harmony's more active role. Thankfully, they were all present, just not as involved in the investigation. Is it my imagination or might there be a love triangle in the making with the young Scotland Yard Inspector? Oh, I hope not. It is past time for Cleo to get over herself and agree to a relationship with Harry. Of course, now I will anxiously await the next book while fretting about this potential new complication in Cleo and Harry's non-relationship relationship. Clearly, these characters draw me in and capture my imagination and emotions. Whatever your feelings about Cleo and Harry, this was an entertaining read, and I highly recommend it. (Tip: Do read the series in order of publication.)

I love South Cove and always look forward to visits with Jill, Greg, and the gang. In this visit, it seems everything is "on the verge." Jill and Greg' are on the verge of marriage. Jill is on the verge of earning her MBA. Aunt Jackie is on the verge of retirement. As a result, others' lives are on the verge of change, and so on. Perhaps nothing is more surprising than the changes in Josh's life, and I admit that I am pleased with his apparent metamorphosis. In the midst of all the personal changes and challenges, there are solid mysteries to solve, including the whereabouts of missing persons and a potential lost treasure, not to mention a murder. While there were several suspects and scenarios, I had most of it pieced together by the closing chapters, but not all. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my time in South Cove and cannot wait for the next book in the series (and Jill's and Greg's wedding!).

Armstrong and Lady Hardcastle are off to Bristol for what proves to be a very confusing assignment from Harry, but these two never disappoint. Intelligent characters, witty banter, and a twisty mystery make for a perfect read.

Joining Evie (Countess of Woodbridge), Tom, and Caro in this outing are "the dowagers," including Evie's American grandmother, Toodles, who has great potential as a recurring character. As much as i enjoy these characters, I thought the story fell a bit short of the entertaining romp i have come to expect in this series. The mystery was good, with a number of suspects, but the reveal seemed a bit rushed, the spark between Evie and Tom was missing, and Caro's usual bossiness was more confrontational than amusing. All in all, I missed the convivial banter that sets this series apart from others. That said, I still recommend the book to readers of the series as a more complete introduction to Toodles and potential foreshadowing of things to come.

Bree Taggert - Need I Say More?

As a flu epidemic sweeps through the Sheriff's department, as well as Sheriff Bree Taggert's family, she and Matt Flynn must find a killer or killers torturing and murdering young women. With limited resources, a rising body count, and threats to Bree's family, the stakes couldn't be higher. Once again, Melinda Leigh brings us a chilling tale that also manages to contrast the best and the worst of family. I look forward to more from Bree and Matt and hope to see more interaction with their family, as well.

I'm going to gush a little because this book was just what I needed. Set in England with an intelligent and likeable protagonist who just flew over from the U. S. to meet her estranged family in the U. K., a swoon worthy love interest, and some delightful supporting characters who come together in a well plotted story complete with family intrigue, murder, and just the right amount of wit and humor. I admit that I had part of the mystery figured out early on, but before I could get too smug, some additional twists and turns made it clear that there was much more to this story. Full disclosure, there is one major TSTL moment, but the book is just too entertaining to get too up in arms about it. Now I cannot wait for Book 2 which I am told is scheduled for release soon. You still have time to get this book and be ready for more of Eliza, Heath, Joy, Great Aunt Iris (who is a hoot), Uncle Fitz, and more.
