Fintan O’Toole is a very good writer—a pleasure to read. Every page is alive. This book tells the story of Ireland in the Post WW2 period up to 2018. It is social, political and cultural history well told. Highly recommended.

This book is filled with tales of court intrigue and gossipy quotes, but little context about why Richelieu was historically important. The performance of the reader was at best average. The reader has a pleasant voice but no expression of the drama of the story. Bottom line: a disappointment

As lively and well-written as any history book. Wedgwood is a master storyteller. I did not care for the style of Charlton Griffin. He sounds like a pompous radio announcer for the 1930s. Not every phrase in every sentence needs to be a mini-drama.

A very good book on history, diplomacy and negotiation

One of the two best books on American diplomacy in recent years. George Packer’s “Our Man” bio of Richard Holbrooke was also a great read but Kissinger was a much, much more consequential and successful diplomat. Indyk provides interesting perspectives from his personal experience in Mideast diplomacy. Master of the Game is well written and insightful.

Balanced and thorough history of Vichy France

An excellent exploration of the time between the surrender of France to Nazi Germany and the liberation and its aftermath. It explores all major French institutions and their collaboration and facilitation of German war aims. A few reviews criticized the book as repetitive but that is not correct. It is detailed and thorough. This book is written by a historian, not a journalist or best-selling author. It avoids the sensational and strives for and achieves balance and accuracy.

Snarky bio with little about Marx’s philosophy

This entire “______ in 90 Minutes” series suffers from the same problem. They are brief biographies and don’t spend very much time discussing the actual philosophy of their subjects. You will learn more about Marx’s marriage, infidelity, financial problems, and grooming habits then you will about his philosophy. It’s not like they didn’t have enough time because the last 20 minutes are a timeline of world philosophy and other similar filler-crap. Also, the style of the writing is very snarky which I found annoying.

Amazing how this novel is still resonant today. Thomas Mann’s writing still amuses and illuminates. David Rintoul’s reading is mainly good except when he renders minor chartered with cockney accents and Scottish brogues.
