Pretty Ableist
Revisado: 07-11-22
I thought this was trite and predictable. Unfortunately, not a realistic experience of a kid living with a disability and going to school. Cute, sweet, heartwarming but pretty ableism centered.

Historia
There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while. Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires.

Better in print
Revisado: 07-11-22
I’m a HUGE Robin McKinley fan and have been for 35 years so I’d already read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I got it for free here I thought perfect, this will be a fun listen.
The narrator killed it for me. This was not the voice I imagined the main character having at all. Such a bummer.

A story of fighting to belong in a world that wasn't built for all of us and of one woman's activism - from the streets of Brooklyn and San Francisco to inside the halls of Washington - Being Heumann recounts Judy Heumann's lifelong battle to achieve respect, acceptance, and inclusion in society. From fighting to attend grade school after being described as a "fire hazard" to later winning a lawsuit against the New York City school system for denying her a teacher's license because of her paralysis, Judy's actions set a precedent that improved rights for disabled people.

One of the best books I’ve ever heard
Revisado: 07-11-22
I can’t recommend this book enough. As an advocate, educator and parent of a disabled young adult, I was excited to read this after seeing Judy in Crip Camp on Netflix. But this book was beyond anything I imagined. Judy tells her story and Ali brings it to life beautifully with strength and grace. It it not just Judy’s story, but the story of our country’s history and the slow, sometimes painful civil rights work that is still sorely needed. Judy gives me hope, inspires me to keep being strong and pull no punches. She also manages to balance the infuriating stories of with profound, grounded stories of her relationships with people, her friends and parents. She reminds me that it’s not all fury and strength but also balance, perspective and relationships that make change happen.
I loved it and am so appreciative of all the hard won victories; yet am ready to continue the fight. Thanks Judy and Aly.

Historia
While studying wolverines on a wildlife sanctuary in Montana, biologist Alex Carter is run off the road and threatened by locals determined to force her off the land. Undeterred in her mission to help save this threatened species, Alex tracks wolverines on foot and by cameras positioned in remote regions of the preserve. But when she reviews the photos, she discovers disturbing images of an animal of a different kind: a severely injured man seemingly lost and wandering in the wilds.

Just right for a nature escape.
Revisado: 07-11-22
After a couple of years diving deep into dystopian/post apocalyptic and fantasy novels, I was looking for something lighter, nature-filled and thrilling for summer. This is fun and the characters well drawn. I specifically looked for a Nevada Barr type novel, but updated. This hit the spot. I thought I knew what was going on and was a little bit judgy about predictability, then there were twists and turns and twists: a lot of them right at the end. (Almost too many.) It’s darker than I predicted also — in a good way, The old lodge was deliciously creepy. (I usually find these mysteries too fluffy.) The main character is determined to rationalize and ignore red flags, and her conversations with her dad are annoying (“pumpkin”) but she’s still hard to kill, in a good way.
I liked learning about wolverines and appreciated the author’s descriptions of the mountains, trees and wildflowers so this was my jam. If you don’t like learning about wildlife conservation and getting an earful of it then this is not for you. It’s clear the author is passionate about it. The narrator was great and engaging. Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Hot Tang IS an Alaskan thing.
Revisado: 12-02-19
I enjoyed listening to this as I grew up in Alaska and it felt so familiar to listen to the voices and envision the scenes. The author and narrator was awesome. I hope to see more in this vein. I both laughed out loud and got chills multiple times. Great job Audible —and supremely masterful investigative journalism and storytelling, James. Thank you!
