Historia
A sense of duty sends Bran Tremayne to Cornwall to confront his heritage of British nobility. Abandoned at birth, Bran wants nothing to do with the embittered remains of his family. But as a special agent for the Home Office, he senses trouble brewing along the coast. And he can't turn away from the vulnerable woman he encounters in the Cornish countryside. Merryn's amnesia makes her past a mystery to them both, but with her life in danger, the only thing Bran knows for sure is that the beautiful stranger needs his protection.

Not a Classic Mary Jo Putney
Revisado: 07-17-24
I have been a long time fan of Ms Putney. I have read several of her books multiple times. In the past she has addressed complex social and psychological issues and build 3 dimensional characters that I care about. This book seems like a hodge podge of Nora Roberts fantasy and Mercedes Lackey mind magic with flat forgettable characters. I'm very disappointed.

Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

compelling true life account
Revisado: 04-12-24
this is a powerfully written and ably narrated story of bit just misplaced justice but deliberate willful misconduct by prosecuters, defense, and judges.
Anthony Ray Hinton was wrongly accused of capital murder, convicted after a farcical trial, and sentenced to death. he spent the first 3 years of his sentence in silence before he began to slowly interact with other prisoners and guards.
this is a story about faith and incredible personal strength.
I can't even imagine how I would deal with a similar burden.
well worth the time. it is also a subtle call to action.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

deeply moving story of hardship and struggleĵ
Revisado: 06-10-23
the narrator was perfect. his voice and accent ate spot on. he never got on the way of the story and added considerably to the experience . this story had so much realism that I kept having to set it aside. I couldn't face the next disaster in Damon's complicated life without taking a break and fortifying my heart. I'd like to believe that these events are not possible but as a foster parent, i know some children come from desperate home situations. and conversely not all foster parents are as depicted in this story. this novel is terribly conscious of a major event in our society with the wide availability of the miracle pain pill and the resulting addiction crisis. a sober look at pharma's role in product promotion.

He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn't look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home.

Beginning a new series and laying groundwoek
Revisado: 07-20-22
I'm a fan of Mary Balough. This is a promising beginning for a new series. As this is the launch book, each of the characters who will tell their own stories in upcoming books must be introduced enough for readers to see the shape of their upcoming stories
The hero starts out as a relatively naive young man with an attractive innocence, dedication to duty and love of family that is sincere and enviable. Confronted with the truth of the essential hypocrisy of his father and the facade of perfect family he responds with dramatic and public outrage. He is exiled from his home by his mother. he responds to what he believes to be an unjust punishment by completely severing his ties with all members of his family except for his natural brother who joins him in exile. He morphs into much more complex man after his exile. The heroine is an enthusiastic slightly unconventional young woman.
Returning home after the death of his father he must decide how to relate to his mother and other family members who all have suffered as a result of his actions.

only stubbornness kept me listening
Revisado: 07-19-22
I really struggled to finish the book. I started it several times when i was looking for something unfinished in my library and couldn't remember what it was. even though I probably started it several times, I couldn't remember if i had read it. The narration drove me away as soon as i started to listen. I finally bit the bullet and plowed on. I have several hundred audible titles in my library and this is the worst one I've encountered. Initially I struggled with the narrator's voice and delivery, she seemed to be trying too hard for New York clip. The only main-ish character I liked was Koa and he was also a stretch. The definition between characters was weak. Only Billy was distinctive and he just sounded weak.
The plot was a pointless, passionless plot. I found I just didn't care about what happened next. The lead poisoning angle just a strange devise. For a supposedly well educated well traveled woman the main character was usually weakly defined. Even she recognized her essential hollowness. I just couldn't work up the energy to care about her.
The ending didn't leave me hoping for more. Luckily I didn't have anything else I wanted to read or I would have felt the time waste.

In Mercedes Lackey's Firebird, Ilya, son of a Russian prince, is largely ignored by his father and tormented by his larger, older brothers. His only friends are three old people: a priest, a magician, and a woman who toils in the palace dairy. From them Ilya learns faith, a smattering of magic, and the power of love - all of which he will need desperately, for his life is about to be turned upside down.

interesting Take on Firebird and Fool Memes
Revisado: 07-17-21
I have been a Mercedes Lackey fan for decades. I've enjoyed her retelling of fairy and folk tales. This one was darker than either original and added new twists and turns. The years of repetitive and escalating experiences of abuse at home for Ilyia culminate in near fratracide. The twist when the hero wins the fair captured princess was unexpected. There is no redemption for either family. This tale has heros, evil sorcerers, talking animals, even dragons and lots and lots of magic.

Historia
It is the summer of 2013, and Abigail Kamara has been left to her own devices. This might, by those who know her, be considered a mistake. While her cousin, police constable and apprentice wizard Peter Grant, is off in the sticks chasing unicorns, Abigail is chasing her own mystery. Teenagers around Hampstead Heath have been going missing, but before the police can get fully engaged, the teens return home - unharmed but vague about where they've been.
