Made me excited for new trilogy: better than 1

I loved the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy and am almost as smitten with this new Cities trilogy. Buuuuuuut.... the second book was way better than the first. So if you read Sex and Vanity and weren't sure about continuing: keep going!

I love, love, love Kevin Kwan's writing style. (All the factual and quirky asides!) But it takes a special voice actor to pull off narrating such work. Jing Lusi doesn't disappoint. The author once again thoughtfully chose the voice for his words. I honestly can't praise this enough. Bummed that I have to wait for the next book - ha!

As far as Highland Romances go, this series was already pretty *meh*. There isn't any build-up to the insta-love couples. There's a ton of alluded-to backstory and very little actual character development. The saving grace is narrator Antony Ferguson's soothing voice. But this PARTICULAR story in the series was so bad that it lingered. I dwelled on the plotholes in sleepless moments. I convinced myself I must have missed books in the series or read it out of order, but NO. I looked it up. I even looked up other books written under the author's other name (Sherrilyn Kenyon). Nope. Didn't miss anything. It's just that bad. Yikes. At least it was part of Audible's free selection.

Enjoyed this, but it took a second to get used to the narrator. She does kind of a weird accent - the vowels sound 'off'. There are certain words from the time period that are mispronounced - repeatedly. And she does an Italian accent that feels like nails down a chalkboard. Oof. I just hope that character never gets her own book.

The story was fun though - engaging, sexy, predictably angsty - perfect for regency romance! A great start to a new series for me. I'll enjoy getting to know the cast of characters better.

I wish the description had been more upfront about the MMF aspect. I probably would have skipped this book on that alone, but at least would have appreciated a heads up. And no disrespect to Teddy Hamilton, but I was also disappointed by the narration after getting used to the amazing Nick Cracknell. And seriously... other reviews mention it, but they CAN'T COMMUNICATE UNTIL CHAPTER SIXTY. It's honestly tedious. I finished listening to this at 2x speed.

When it got to the big conflict near the end, I was screaming "GIRL, RUN!!! That's a dealbreaker!" So toxic and bad. And Ash's weird pro-life feelings further exposed his selfishness. Maybe because I've known too many women in similar situations in real life... I was just DONE with the story there. All the sexiness for naught. He's just another a**hole. Save yourself the drama.

Can't read another story where the female lead makes pathetic life choices. Ugh.

Felt like Holmberg's take on Xianxia

This was a departure from Holmberg's other fantasy books. They always kind of feel like they exist in the same magical universe... and this series did NOT. Celestial kingdoms, gods, godlings, creation stories, hundreds of years passing... I kept waiting for someone to mention "cultivation".

Overall, not an easy read. The lead character isn't the only one set upon becoming a martyr, but her level of self-sacrifice is punishing. It bummed me out. A lot of this bummed me out. And definitely not a HEA ending.

It's bad. So bad.

I wanted to quit halfway through (and this is already a mini-read at just under 2 hours) and leave a review with a great big '*DNF' qualifier but Audible literally would not allow me to do so. A message I had never seen before popped up, not just a generic error, basically stating I needed to listen to more before I was allowed to submit a review.

The female narrator, Jade Valentine, is painfully bad. Her reading is why I wanted to bail on this book. The writing isn't great, so she didn't have a lot to work with, but come on... The male narrator, Marcio Catalano, managed to do okay with the same writing.

She speaks so slowly that I was still able to understand her clearly at 3x speed. Which is how I managed to slog through the second half to leave this review. I had to slow it back down for chapters she didn't narrate; but again, his parts didn't feel like torture.

Seriously - skip this one.

These stories are captivating escapes into the past. They're romantic, brooding, and very, very sexy.

The references to characters from a previous book in the series (not available on Audible) were kind of annoying. Overall, the story was kind of *meh*.

Ugh. So many mispronounced words. And that's just the English. Don't get me started on how bad the Korean was or the sad attempt at pronouncing the Japanese name Machiko. (Maybe that bothers me more because I know Machikos, but come on. Anyone can Google that shiz!) I also didn't know how distracting it was to pronounce Italian words and places exclusively with a Spanish accent, but please add that to my list of pet peeves. Geez. If they aren't going to hire appropriate voice actors, I wish the sound production team would step up and help the voice actors: re-record mispronounced words/names and teach actors how to pronounce foreign dialogue phonetically. Not doing those things is a choice!
