Interesting overview

Interesting review of brain research. There has been so much research since this was recorded, some of the information is outdated.
I was saddened by his criticism of Elisabeth Kübler Ross. I was fortunate to meet her many years ago when she was a visiting lecturer at Yale University. She said her biggest regret was publishing the 5 stages of grief. She meant her work to help with understanding the letting go process - instead it was being used as a template for what people must do when they are dying, or a loved one is dying.

Clear, concise, compassionate

B. Alan Wallace presents a clear understanding of Tibetan Buddhism for Western practitioners, including the similarities between Western science and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and beliefs. Lojong practices are explained with a minimum of Tibetan terms. At all times, Lama Wallace’s kindness and wisdom are evident.

“Anonymous was a Woman” - no longer

For generations, history books show cultures created and molded almost exclusively by men. Here, the professor elucidates the lives of pre-Renaissance women who changed the world. Certainly there are more women who were influential, and perhaps the professor will write a sequel.

An entertaining series of lectures that elucidate growth in thought and identity over centuries, and via many intellectual systems. The professor cleverly and emphatically repeats “but” in the lectures, as a cue he is going to show a transition in thinking and theory.

Best Memoir Ever

Yovanovich has written an honest, soul-searching memoir. From her early days as a neophyte in the state department to her nuanced work as a senior diplomat, she is not afraid to show her insecurities as well as her accomplishments. The common threads throughout are her high standard of ethics, and her love for the democracy and people of her adopted country.

Nuanced, clear, insightful

Fiona Hill combined memoir and political analysis, and showed how her rural British personal history informed her work as a presidential advisor on Russian political history and current events. The book offered fascinating insights into her tenure at the White House, as well as the life-long obstacle of being an intelligent woman working in a man’s world.
Her optimism in the last portion of the book, discussing how the US economy could be transformed to work for everyone, did not address the negative aspects of the politics of power in Washington DC.
