I wanted to love this book because I love Tamron Hall and I enjoyed the first book. However, Book2 of the Jordan Manning series is rather dull to be quite honest. I totally understand that all thrillers aren’t created equal, and authors don’t have to subscribe to a myriad of plot twists & turns throughout a story for added shock value. Though that style of storytelling usually keeps readers engaged at the very least. I found it a bit difficult to care about anything that was happening in this book! Although it’s well written, and the author is very intentional with her writing.

Additionally, the Jordan character feeds into the stereotype that extremely successful Black Women are often lonely and unwed. Like it’s either a prominent career or family, but “they” can’t have both! Even though we see her invite Nate to attend the event at the end of the book, it felt like it was more out a of desperation, versus an authentic connection. Everything about her and Nate felt forced. Lastly, I do think the author is amazing and I truly appreciate her writing style I just hoped for a little more action and unfortunately this one fell a little short in my opinion. However, I’d definitely recommend this book and series to anyone interested in a good ole “whodunnit” story!! Let me know what you think in the comments!!

This latest installment to the Skyland series did not disappoint. It was awesome getting to know the fine Mamacita Soledad. Kennedy’s writing remains sharp and wittily funny. Of course there’s much to swoon over regarding Judah Cross, and much to hate concerning her husband, which we already kind of knew from BILG! I totally love the elements of authenticity throughout the book, whether it was on display as Sole navigated the complexities of motherhood or the bonds of sisterhood. There was honest dialogue among all characters for the most part outside of the main antagonist who was the only true jerk throughout the book. Back to the authenticity, the conversations were really interesting and felt so much like I could be having that exact convo with a friend or family member. I guess I’m looking for the word “relatable”, outside of the trauma caused by the husband, and the criminal element to the story, all of Sole’s relationships felt “peaceful” and so UNFORCED. Even the little discourse between Sole & her daughter(s) were very understandable and justifiable given the circumstances and scrutiny that followed in the aftermath of their father’s situation. Additionally, the courage and resilience of Soledad was amazing and I think it was important for the author to convey a message of hope and fierceness. It was important for her daughters & “us” to see Sole rise up from the fiery ashes of her husband’s burning betrayal! From her not being afraid to turn in evidence, to respecting her daughter’s wishes to visit their dad, she kept it as real in the most bad ass of ways! More importantly, she kept it real with herself. I appreciated that Sole was not willing to compromise her self worth or her dignity to keep up a false narrative. She got right to work on herself “mentally, emotionally, physically” and the whole concept of dating one’s self was brilliant. Far too often we put so much energy into NOT being alone, that we end up settling for far less than what we deserve! I loved the social media aspect of the book and employing the influencer marketing tactics as a primary source of income for Sole as she had to do what was necessary for their immediate survival. The friendship amongst the ladies was popping per usual with a Kennedy Ryan masterpiece. The way they love and show up for one another is truly unmatched, and speaks volumes on what mutual love and friendship looks like……..
This book was definitely a nice vibe and a beautiful expression of our dope hoods. Kennedy Beautifully explores the depths of modern day motherhood, sisterhood, the femininity of womanhood and not to mention the various struggles of adulthood!
Things on my mind after reading this:
~Judah, Judah, Judah
~Bell Hooks (Get Familiar with her work)
~Autism Awareness
~Staying Current with all doc appointments and getting tested regularly for all of the things😑
~Overall being a better person and showing up for the important people in my life

Tracy Brown was an excellent story teller and she will be thoroughly missed. I enjoyed this book very much. Brooklyn reminded me so much of Sister Souljah’s Winter Santiago! (IYKYK) Her ability to vividly captivate the reader with each scene is truly remarkable. I felt like I could genuinely relate to every single character in this story, from her Dad to her baby sister Hope. And although I personally can’t relate to being involved in the “streets” or the “church” Tracy did a phenomenal job of intertwining both worlds and laying the foundation for Brooklyn’s chaotic downward spiral. Secondly, I didn’t care for Sabrina as a mother at all. However, she definitely played her “role” of devoted housewife and coveted First Lady of Promise Land and stood by her husband’s side thru all of the madness. I also love the connection between the church politics and the street politics, Brooklyn really saw her father as a “hustler” and the church as a source of wicked entertainment. Last but not least, my heart breaks for many of these characters and how unfortunate it was that they had no adequate outlets to confront their struggles with depression, infidelity, inferiority, sexuality, sexual abuse head on. This was a great tragedy that our dear Tracy penned. A true testament to “Falling from grace”. And finally just a reminder for us parents to focus and listen to our children’s needs more. Had Sabrina given Brooklyn the love and grace that she deserved from the very beginning, I believe her story wouldn’t have ended so tragically. Ok, seriously my final thought is that whole facade of a family failed poor Amir..

A Romance Novel to its core. Beautifully written. Tia executes these amazing timeless fictional dualities of Black Romance. Chef’s Kiss…. A great February pick. (Valentine’s Day and Black History Month) This book is a perfect Blend of Black wholesomeness aka Black Love.

This was a decent paced Thriller! I enjoyed it and would recommend for sure. However, for me
The only con is the lack of character depth. I would’ve loved to know more about Roland, the kind of man he is deep down. And I would have liked more of a build up between Sameerah and him before they got married and during the marriage. It felt like there was really no connection they met at a party and then was married a few weeks later?! Like how?! P.S. the narrator’s voice was soooo annoying!! 😤
