Historia
For years, Gary Gulman had been the comedian’s comedian, acclaimed for his delight in language and his bracing honesty. But after two stints in a psych ward, he found himself back in his mother’s house in Boston—living in his childhood bedroom at age forty-six, as he struggled to regain his mental health. That’s where Misfit begins. Then it goes way back. This is no ordinary book about growing older and growing up. Gulman has an astonishing memory and takes the listener through every year of his childhood education, with detailed stories that are in turn alarming and riotously funny.

Surviving depression and low self esteem
Revisado: 06-09-24
I thought it was wonderful that Gary could look back at a difficult childhood and tell the story with so much humor. Living in the same town as Gary grew up, I enjoyed hearing about familiar place and some people I know.
So many of us have grown up with low self esteem. It was helpful to hear about how Gary coped with his mental health issues.
Overall it was a fun and informative read. I hope Gary continues on his good path.

The reader was the highlight
Revisado: 01-14-24
It was a nice story but not outstanding. What I enjoyed most was Meryl Streep as the reader.
I also liked that there wasn’t violence or erotic sexual sections. It was just a decent relaxing story for a change.

Historia
In Paradise - her first novel since she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature - Toni Morrison gives us a bravura performance. As the book begins deep in Oklahoma early one morning in 1976, nine men from Ruby (pop. 360), in defense of "the one all-black town worth the pain", assault the nearby Convent and the women in it. From the town's ancestral origins in 1890 to the fateful day of the assault, Paradise tells the story of a people ever mindful of the relationship between their spectacular history and a void.

Paradise, really!
Revisado: 01-14-23
Some books are better listened to and others not. There were too many characters to follow while listening. I was more often than not confused with the story and it’s people.
Maybe more important than the story, is Toni Morrison’s writing. It reads like poetry with a rhythm and beautiful descriptions. No matter how confusing it was to read, the writing kept me engaged and invested.

Immigrants' Dreams
Revisado: 03-04-21
America giveth and taketh away. This book was mirror held up to this country's flawed immigration system. The reader was fabulous. The characters felt very real. It was hard to see them turn from being appreciative to having a sense of entitlement. It affected their sense of right and wrong.
I enjoyed this book and have a new appreciation for new immigrants. It made remember stories my grandmother told me about her journey here in the 1920s. It seems even worse now than it used to be.

Historia
It is the turn of the 18th century in Frankfurt, Germany, and young Gutle and Meir Amschel Rothschild struggle to establish themselves in the cramped, restricted Judengasse. But when Meir’s talents as a novice banker catch the attention of a German prince, Meir is afforded entrée into the European world of finance and nobility, and the Rothschilds’ lives are changed forever. As proud as Gutle is of her husband’s success, she is also cautious - very much aware of the fact that her husband’s rise is tied to his patrons’ willingness to “see past” his Jewishness.

Review of First Mrs. Rothschild
Revisado: 10-31-20
I thought it was very well written. It moved slowly in several spots. However, the story was very interesting. There was such a dichotomy about the value of money. The luxuries that money can buy were almost evil to her but the good that it could do through charity was a "mitzvah". Would love to know which elements were based on history and which were totally fiction.

Was hard to stop listening. Very engaging, yet parts were very painful to hear. Prologue made me change my views of certain characters.
