Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Sports cliche
Revisado: 06-25-24
I liked some of the characters, the wise gay boy, the friendships and Maya. I disliked the repetitive sports talk, the intermittent bits of wisdom that did not seem very wise and the predicability of events.

Author's wisdom.
Revisado: 04-14-24
This I think is one of the best books I've ever read and I am so happy the author read it. Another would have ruined it. I laughed, I cried, I sobbed, I delighted and audibly gasped! at different moments. All so messy and beautiful and all so complicated but made the most sense of anything I've ever read. I am I awe if this author and so grateful for this wonderful book.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Talented writer, young audiences book. Young female narrator literally drove me nuts.
Revisado: 03-04-24
I couldn't finish this book. it is a soap opera with quotes of wisdom. My fault because I did not realize it is a young adult novel. it is possible I should read the actual book to have a completely different experience. The narrator for Noor completely ruined it for me as she overacted the whole time and painted a picture of the young female character that did not do her justice at all. I just couldnt get past it and had to stop the book midway. As a reader I just want the book to be read without much affect so I can interpret on my own.

The narrator was not the right pick.
Revisado: 02-14-24
I am a big fan of the writer and loved Station Eleven and the Sea of Tranquility. I appreciate that some of her characters are present in all three novels and love the way she writes. this book however is in my opinion too long, her exploration of the corporate scheme is boring and I honestly did not care for any of the characters because there are tooooo many and because the main characters are underdeveloped and lack purpose. The narrator made most characters sound like either a 12 year old girl or someone stoned or drunk. it was for me so distracting and upsetting.

Important information.
Revisado: 12-06-23
The writer is well intended and well informed, the book is not well executed. The story is heartbreaking, as is the situation in the occupied territories, but the book Lacks cohesiveness and focus. There are so many characters it is difficult to follow and understand, if the author had delved deeper into the main characters and stayed with the throughout, it would have been a better read. I appreciate the effort, but the story is so so immense you can not try to tell it whole, we needs smaller bits to be able to digest.

Historia
James Baldwin’s stunning first novel is now an American classic. With startling realism that brings Harlem and the black experience vividly to life, this is a work that touches the heart with emotion while it stimulates the mind with its narrative style, symbolism, and excoriating vision of racism in America. Moving through time from the rural South to the northern ghetto, Baldwin chronicles a 14-year-old boy’s discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935.

I respect the author and understand that Mr. Baldwin is a genius writer and human, but I cannot say I enjoyed this book. It reads like a continuous poetic deeply religious prayer and it was a bit much for me. I could not wait to finish it !!

Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2009 in a remote Mennonite community where more than 100 girls and women were drugged unconscious and assaulted in the night by what they were told (by the men of the colony) were "ghosts" or "demons", Miriam Toews' bold and affecting novel Women Talking is an imagined response to these real events.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Challenging and engaging
Revisado: 07-23-23
I am a sucker for stories taking place in NY and wanted to read this novel because it won the Pulitzer. At first I had a difficult time staying focused, as the characters were more like background afterthoughts, but I waited and it was so worth it. As the story develops the characters become much more clear and even relatable. despite them being filthy rich. unlike some reviewers, I did not experience the book as different stories; to me each chapter delved deeper into the characters and by the last one I felt I knew Mildred and understood her and for me her poetry was sublime.

Brave, interesting and heart breaking.
Revisado: 07-19-23
I enjoyed this book and found it to be compelling. and engaging. the author is brave and bears all but holds back at the end. it seems not to hurt those she learned to love and those she forgave. could have been more consistent in the writing as sometimes it was difficult to know where she was headed.
