I heard the author on the Shedunnit podcast and thought this book would be right up my alley - which it is! The narrator, Sandra Duncan, is absolutely brilliant and really made the book for me. I loved the story as well. My only complaint is that our heroine, Dora, sometimes seems to go on at random places n ways that don’t seem to further the plot, but overall a wonderful listen!

A fabulous listen, I enjoyed the whole thing immensely! Atmospheric creeping dread at its best!

Bronson Pinchot’s performance is great. The first five minutes I was dubious and then I fell in love with him. Other good things: fun, nail biting suspense, decent characters, good story (Though I do have some issues with it, to follow).
Aless good thing: I spent the ENTIRE book wondering WHY DOES HECK HAVE A SCOTTISH ACCENT???? The text says he has a Scottish and southern accent (this is not just Bronson Pinchot’s interpretation, though he manages to pull it off very well, no mean feat). WHY???? He grew up in the states, raised by a mother and stepfather who are American (of Scottish descent). WTF?
Other annoying things: pretty sure this book does NOT pass the Bechdel Test. That is, it’s pretty sexist. People will disagree because it has some great female characters, but that doesn’t make it not sexist, especially if the focus of those female characters is always on the male characters.
The last big annoyance: as a recovering Wiccan, I have to say that the portrayal of the “ancient forces” at work in the book was ... flawed. And that’s being polite. I could be even more polite and call it simplistic. Or slightly rude and say he didn’t know what the hell he was talking about.
Also, the human bad guys were all obvious slimy, dirty mouth-breathers who practically had signs on the foreheads declaring “I am a bad guy”. Oy.
Having said all those things, I enjoyed the book, and definitely the performance!

Super original idea, interesting world, cool main character ... now if only she had written a full, fleshed-out story instead of a book outline. I hope to see more from Ms. Okorafor in future, because she's got really neat ideas ...

I liked this book, the characters were fun, the love story sweet and the plot - if somewhat fantastic - was not jarringly weird or anachronistic.

First, let me confess that this is one of my favorite books ever, and I've read it so many times! That often makes the audiobook more difficult, as one has formed set ideas on what the characters sound like. Having said that, I was not wild about this reader - at first - because of his Sean Connery take on Mr. Dunworthy. However, once Ned is pitched into Victorian England, he is spot on!
A fantastic book, a wonderful reader ... perfect listen. Also, go read Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat, to Say Nothing of the Dog"

Don't get me wrong, the book is really good, but boy the government acronyms really slow things down! If you don't mind that, it's a great story, but I really recommend the movie - it's just the good parts! :D

This also goes for "The Name of the Rose", a fabulous but extremely involved book that made me wish I had multiple history, art history and ancient language degrees. The movie with Sean Connery is just the "good parts" version.

Some truly stellar stories, some not so much

Some of the stories are truly amazing - two standouts are "Neighbors" by Megan Lindholm and "Second Arabesque, Very Slowly" by Nancy Kress, both are absolutely brilliant stories. Three others that are excellent are "Raisa Stepanova" by Carrie Vaughn, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson and "Some Desperado" by Joe Abercrombie.

Some of the stories written by the male authors were ... difficult for me. I guess "Dangerous Women" made me erroneously expect strong women or women as the protagonist or even as the main character and those were not always the case. Which is fine. I just didn't like the ones in which the "dangerous woman" was more of an afterthought or a victim. But it was worth listening to just for the Lindholm and Kress stories, and all the readers were excellent.

Her premise is interesting, but I never got engaged or stopped feeling that I would have liked it if I saw it onstage but wasn't thrilled with it in this format.
