great start to a new series. everything had a good flow. book would have been even better with a better narrator like sbt/jeff hays or travis Baldree. but this narrator seems to do most of this author's books. its really not to bad but i did find it more enjoyable on 1.2 speed.

imagine the MC from He who fights with monsters as the MC in Beware of Chicken. Same narrator as HWFWM which is great. The story is very much like beware of chicken, super strong mc but he doesn't even realize/know it. Slice of life, comedy and just enough strife/action to keep it moving. can't wait for book 2

The narration is very good. I feel like the story could be good but it's horrifly dragged down by the shear amount of action log readouts. It would be fine if it was maybe 1 line of dialogue but no it's.

(actual story of leading up to and performing the attack) and then you get..

you cast (spell) on target..
you have hit target with spell..
target burns with holy fire..
target is seriously wounded..
target has died..
your party gains 25 experience..

this happens like every time he does something and some times it's less sometimes it's way more and it's terrible for the flow. This is an audio book so it's hard to accurately skip this where as reading the actual book a person could skim or skip this information and move on.

To be completely transparent I left this review before finishing the book. it is remains unchanged then my complaints never resolved themselves. if it improves I will edit this review .

To clarify why I think is worthless info that breaks the flow is that nothing has a number. we are told his health, mana and stamina have a number but the only one we ever hear about is health. we never hear how much mana it actually costs to use skills. we never hear about how much actual damage an attack does it's just an adjetive like a moderate amount. we can make inferences with that but then things just die.. how many hp did it have in the first place? heard one time he drank a health potion and it restored his hp up to 20 points, how much did he have before? WE DON'T KNOW. oh and then he used his healing skill on himself cause he wanted more than 20 hp but we don't know how much it raised it. just that it's not full.

i decided to try out this book mostly due to it being so long. As a truck driver its pretty easy to go through several books a week.

things i actually enjoyed. the system. it's very minimal and hands off. there isn't 400 million silly skills. in the F grade you might develop a skill on your own like fist fighting for example. during class selection you get a few options based off what you've shown so far and the class only offers a few skills. you can then form dow and create dow skills but again just a few. and the status screen only has 3 options, physical mental and willpower. this means overall there are no long winded stat dumps. hooray. Also really like that system integration didn't totally wipe out technology. everything "crashed" so no satellites etc but cars still work, they was able to restore electricity to the town etc

overall id say its worth a credit, But there are times its.. well... there's a part in the book where someone says cringe and the MC says "don't say cringe.. cause you know that's.. cringe." and I feel like that sums up some parts of the book.

Thankfully those times are short lived and they moved on. Also, sometimes things just dragged on entirely to long and i found myself skipping half a chapter just to get on with it, not to often but it did happen, this book reaches triple digit chapters.

it might be worth noting that the f bomb drops often which i don't mind but i see people complain about it often. is it needed? maybe not but it's simply realistic.

this is a preliminary review as I haven't finished the book yet. My biggest issue is the female narrator and horrible inconsistencies.

The system voice is female and that's perfectly fine. Shenade, the first female MC.. she sounds fine but her volume is WAY louder than the male narrator whom narrates everything else so its a bit jarring. in a way it sounds like her audio was inserted after the fact and doesn't flow naturally.

ivy, the 2nd female mc... makes me want to delete the book everytime she talks. she sounds like a 90 year old southern woman with a low iq.

another oddity and this one concerns the male narrator as well.. they are in Indiana.. but numerous people have like this Chicago/Boston/irish accent. it's weird.

The inconsistencies.. its like the author has goldfish brain occasionally. the biggest issue for me is that these inconsistencies happen within sentences of each other, how does your info change so quickly?

examples. picking up 20 loot chest saying it took up 2 pages of the inventory but then when he opens them its only the 10 on the first page. orrrrr eating dinner and it states he finished his bread and then his soup and how he was amazed it was gone already but that he was full. then literally like the next sentence or 2 hes eating his bread and soup again.

there was a few more situations like that but I can't remember the details. What worries me the most about this is now I'm not sure if the MC is just occasionally an idiot or if it's because the author forgot what was possible or is going on.

for example. the first time he goes out from the safezone he takes a bag of supplies. Great. the problem is they are all fascinated with the inventory ability, it's still amazing to them hours into the book later. does he put this bag of supplies into his inventory? nope. and then later returns to the safe area early because all the stuff got soaked. not even his friends mention/ask why he didn't put them in his inventory. its possible that pre system stuff wont go in the inventory but that's never stated and as far as I know up to this point never tried. Is this author oversight? or character oversight?

I don't want to give away anything else but theres been other things that pop up or get mentioned once but don't seem to exist later.

I feel like the story is there and the male narrator is good but the writing needs some editing

Unlike a lot of apocalypse litrpgs This one doesn't start off by randomly killing whatever percentage of people. This one starts with everybody alive and the Apocalypse doesn't start until you acknowledge. Everyone that is give anl chance to acknowledge faces but a single monster. As with all stories like this one it only gets worse from there.

In my opinion the author does a good job of nailing down just how people and the government would react in these situations. The main characters have pretty good back stories as well, Pretty believable.

The narrator does a good job and If you don't like endless stat dumps then this is perfect for you. they do level up and gain stat points to spend but its limited. there are no endless skills to go through. In fact you rarely ever have to listen to a full Breakdown of the main character stats at all, Most of the time It just says what they spent the point on.

Dislikes? Serenity whom is a main character, a companion of sorts to the main main character James. She.. idk... from her back story you can conclude that she was a f-up, gutter trash, destined to OD In a bathroom in some bar. the story does a pretty good job at building her up from being trash to important but occasionally the way the author has her talk/act just is a bit annoying sometimes (not so much a I'm better than you sort of way but a I'm wiser than you so you should just shut up. okay honey? ) (the way she calls people honey is never in an endearing way) but that's a matter of opinion. but what I find more annoying is that no one calls her out on it, Its like the author always gives her that last word, last joke, last comment and that's the end of it. I just find it hard to believe that during a crisis when emotions are running high that everyone chooses to keep their mouth shut.

other than that no real complaints, its worth a credit. when i got the book it was on sale for 7.99 which is cheaper than a credit

Travis Baldree knocks this out of the park as usual with his narration. Im about to finish book 4 now and ive been overall pleased with every book. If I had any real complaints Its that occasionally, I feel like in my opinion, that some scenes, usually fighting, take entirely to long. In book 4 there is a 1v1 fight that took 3 chapters... Another great plus is that the stat dumps are minimal and really short in comparison to many in different books.

I can really appreciate trying to have an accent that fits the characters but.. I would be perfectly happy with a normal accent reading this, like Travis Baldree for example. I feel like there is a great story here but sometimes it's very hard to understand.. it'll be hard to continue this series on audible, may have to read on Kindle.

I don't want to give anything away but I will say push past the first few beginning chapters.

the beginning just gave the impression of a certain type of MC that most might find annoying. but as said it goes away quickly.

good narration, story acceptable so far, few little things i thought was dumb but the book is still solidly in the "glad i listened to it" category.

I always consider a series when they are narrated by Travis, such a great narrator.

I suck at these sort of reviews but if you like the litrpg stuff then you'll like this. strong mc that isn't a whiny cry baby. perhaps OP for his level but his fights aren't easy.

only real advice I can give is to beware book 2. read the reviews and know what you are getting into. don't skip it but know that it gets better again in book 3.
