Long-listed, Audible.com 100 Audible Essentials, 2007
Audie Award winner, 2008
NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård, and Charlotte Rampling
Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family—and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.
A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

At the beginning of his career, Joseph Campbell developed a lasting fascination with the cultures of the Far East, and explorations of Buddhist and Hindu philosophy later became recurring motifs in his vast body of work. However, Campbell had to wait until middle age to visit the lands that inspired him so deeply. In 1954, he took a sabbatical from his teaching position and embarked on a year-long voyage through India, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and finally Japan.

The first robot to walk the earth was a bronze giant called Talos. This wondrous machine was created not by MIT Robotics Lab, but by Hephaestus, the Greek god of invention, more than 2,500 years ago. In this groundbreaking account of the earliest expressions of the timeless impulse to create artificial life, Adrienne Mayor tells the fascinating story of how ancient Greek, Roman, Indian, and Chinese myths envisioned artificial life, automata, self-moving devices, and human enhancements - and how these visions relate to and reflect the ancient invention of real animated machines.

Why were Prometheus and Loki envisioned as chained to rocks? What was the Golden Calf? Why are mirrors believed to carry bad luck? How could anyone think that mortals like Perseus, Beowulf, and St. George actually fought dragons, since dragons don't exist? Many ancient civilizations have influenced and inspired people in the 21st century. The Greeks and Romans continue to fascinate the West today. But of all the world's civilizations, none have intrigued people more than the Mayans, whose culture, astronomy, language, and mysterious disappearance all continue to captivate people. In 2012 especially, there was a renewed focus on the Mayans, whose advanced calendar led many to speculate the world would end on the same date the Mayan calendar ends.

Like the alphabet, the calendar, or the zodiac, the periodic table of the chemical elements has a permanent place in our imagination. But aside from the handful of common ones (iron, carbon, copper, gold), the elements themselves remain wrapped in mystery. We do not know what most of them look like, how they exist in nature, how they got their names, or of what use they are to us.

Kenneth C. Davis, author of Don't Know Much About® History, Don't Know Much About the Civil War and Don't Know Much About the Bible, turns his inimitable wit and wide-ranging knowledge to the subject of geography, and proves once and for all that there is a lot more to it than labeling countries on a map. From often amusing perceptions people have had through the ages about the world and the universe to the changing map of today, Davis shows how geography is really a great crossroad of many fields: biology, meteorology, astronomy, history, economics, and even politics.

Why didn't the Chinese discover America? Why were people so slow to learn the earth goes around the sun? How and why did we begin to think of "species" of plants and animals? How, when, and why did people begin digging in the earth to learn about the past? How did the study of economics begin? These are but a few of the fascinating questions answered by Dr. Boorstin, Librarian of Congress Emeritus.

In layered prose and with thoughtful, accessible scholarship, Aslan narrates the history of religion as one long and remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, "Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless if we are believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves."

Offering mind-blowing information that will radically alter the way we think about the world and our place in it, Marrs goes beyond the revelations of his classic Alien Agenda, interweaving science and authentic archaeological finds with provocative speculation to show how human civilization may have originated with nonhumans who visited earth eons ago.

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Now Herbert's son, Brian, working with Kevin J. Anderson and using Frank Herbert's own notes, reveals a pivotal epoch in the history of the Dune universe: the Butlerian Jihad, the war that was fought ten thousand years before the events of Dune - the war in which humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines."

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Thoroughly Enjoyable!!!
Unlike Issac Asimov's "Foundation", this production of "Dune" is Thoroughly Enjoyable Listening. The full cast production brings the pages of this book to life. The music track is subtle in the background and enhances rather than detracts.
I've been waiting for this for over 5 years and I look forward to the next 6 in this anthology.
If your a lover of "Dune", you won't be disappointed. If not, Try it, good chance you'll like it.

Not a Sci-Fi fan . . .
I'm not really a Sci-Fi fan but because Dune is on every "must read" list I ever saw, I put it on my "to read" list. I finally got around to it on Audible. I'm still a bit confused by it which is why I don't read Sci-Fi as a general rule. However, I have the physical book as well and, gratefully, it includes a kind of glossary of Herbert's terms which I used frequently. I can't say I came away amazed by the book, although I did enjoy it. I especially loved the analogies and symbolism within the story very much. I watched parts of the 1984 movie as I read which only made it more confusing since it is quite different from the book. For example, I kept waiting for the baron to fly around and act silly with big puss pockets all over his face like he did in the movie. What was up with that?
Every narrator was excellent but my personal preference would have been to let Simon Vance, who is quite capable of all characterizations, read the whole thing, with the exception of the quotes from the princess that I found quite charmingly read by whoever it was.
Although I'm glad I read/listened to it, I don't think I'll be getting the whole series but I'm really glad you Sci-Fi lovers have those to look forward to.

Great novel, well delivered
Dune is a classic of science fiction. It's not a standard "starships-and-lasers" space opera kind of story...it's a more nuanced "politics, assassins and spies" kind of tale.
The story tells of a multi-armed power struggle in a future world which is an interesting blend of mythos, technology and feudal politics. The immediate tale is that of Paul Atriedes, scion of a noble family, and his survival on the desert world of Dune.
I think this is a great story, but be warned: it is a slow-mover. It takes over 20 hours to listen to it; The plot isn't 20-hours complex, but there are diversions to create flavor and imagery of the "Duniverse." (This is how Frank Herbert wrote, in general.)
Several other reviewers have complained (with justice) about the unusual way this is presented. Most of the book is narrated by a single (good) narrator, but some "enhanced" scenes are dramatized by multiple actors. It's a little odd, but if you know to expect it, it's not off-putting. I just wish that the producers could have had multi-voice dramatizations for all of the dialog, instead of just some of it.

Narration distracting
Book is a classic. No question there. I'll comment on the narration. I read the review that explained how the book was narrated, which helped a lot during my listen. But it still threw me when the narration switched back and forth from full cast to single narrator. Be prepared: different narrators for the same character, depending if the section is read by the full cast or by the single narrator.
Too bad the entire book wasn't full cast. Would have been so much better!!!!!

A Pleasant Surprise
This is the kind of shock I like. Instead of being disappointed that a story doesn't live up to the impossibly high standard that has been set for it, I was drawn in by this book so much that I hated every time I had to stop without finishing. I didn't really expect to like this book at all but it was great.
Makes you wonder about a place like Mars which has little or no water. What would it take to live there? This book makes an interesting case of what such a life might be like (sans the absence of oxygen), especially in the context of how we take water for granted.
Probably one of the most original and creative stories I've ever read.

Overcomes the audio weirdness!
I agree with many of the reviewers: changing the actor who is voicing a character is inexplicable. The combo of single narrator and voiced characters did not bother me. The quality of several of the actors did, but it wasn't enough to ruin the experience. Simon Vance is so terrific that the single narration carries it. Blessedly, the amount of time we spend with the lesser-talented actors is limited.
I had never read the book, though I've read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy. I found that while the world was fascinating, the characters did not really move me.
That said, I'm glad I listened to it, though I doubt I'll go on to the sequels.

Enjoyable.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
As an intro to sci-fi no. While it's got a lot of good elements, it moves a bit slowly. But if they were already familiar with the genre but hadn't yet come across this one, I would recommend it just because it's considered such a classic.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Honestly, I wouldn't say I had a favorite character.
Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?
The main narrator, yes. The man who did the voice of Baron Harkonen, no.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, it's a bit dry for that.
Any additional comments?
The multiple narrators was not used to full effect in this audio version. I never could figure out any pattern of when they brought in the cast to do the voices and when they allowed the main narrator to read all parts. There were times when I thought it would have been better to bring in the full cast to better capture the mood but they didn't, and then in shorter exchanges between multiple characters, they do allow the rest of the cast. And the characterization differences between the main narrator and the cast are wildly different and can be a bit jarring at times. Especially when they switch back and forth in the same scene. I wish it had been more consistent.

Incredible book with distracting audio issues.
I loved it, but sometimes voices shift from a full cast to a narrator only unexpectedly, and while both are excellent it can be quite jarring, especially when some actors really make their characters stand out (such as Baron Harknonnen).

Good listen!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes....because it's a good story.
Any additional comments?
Even tho I liked the audio version of this book.... after having watched the movie, a friend loaned me her hard bound copy of the book....which included a dictionary of "their language" I became sooo hooked....I bought every new soft cover that came out, following Paul's journey..........but, I never bought the final book.....it started going waaaaaaay out in left field, and I found it hard to understand! But this listen is very good!
