Resumen del Editor

“SOS Titanic to all ships. Sinking head down 41.46 N 50.14 W. Come as soon as possible.”

North Atlantic Ocean, 1912. Kate Royston is a witness to history as the RMS Carpathia responds to the Titanic’s desperate SOS. Kate plans to escape personal tragedy by fleeing to Europe, but everything changes when the Carpathia races to save the Titanic’s survivors.

Forced to return to New York, Kate abandons her hope of escape and becomes embroiled as a vital witness in the high-profile Senate investigation of the disaster.

Fueled by public rage and political infighting, the investigation becomes a witch hunt. Although Kate knows the truth she’s terrified that pitting her eyewitness account against ruthless, powerful men will leave her ruined. As she struggles to make a decision, her heart leads her to two men—a powerful lawman and a handsome young radio operator.

Can Kate find happiness in the midst of tragedy?

Meticulously researched and using actual witness testimony, The Girl on the Carpathia begins where most Titanic stories end and answers the questions “What happened next?” and "Who was to blame?"

The Girl on the Carpathia is a gripping stand-alone historical novel inspired by real events. If you like passionate characters, surprising revelations, and endearing romances, then you’ll love Eileen Enwright Hodgetts' seamless blend of fact and fiction.

Good story; poor narration

I don’t like to criticize professionals, but the narration sounded almost computer generated. It detracted from the story. I hope the narrator has taken more training.

poor reading, good story

the narrator sounded as if they were reading the story (with different voices), but not as if it was a performance. poor cadence, tiresome after a while. I liked the story enough to finish, but that diminished how much I liked the book.

Girl on the Carpathia

Insight into the activities that happened after the Titanic sank, fictional characters blended with real people, the intrigue of the very new Marconi machine & operators, the division of 1st 2nd & 3rd class passengers, the sensationalism of the newspapers reporters, "women & children first" on the lifeboats and the mindset of "cowardice" towards the men that did manage to get on a lifeboat. The US Senate Inquiry and the resulting US laws passed were fascinating and important measures taken to prevent future tragedies of inadequate number of lifeboats, the establishment of the Ice Patrol amongst US Coast Guard and other nations, etc
Splendid research resulting in a eye opening, delightful read with engrossing characters. At the end of the book, there is a list of the fictional characters plus a section of real people mentioned in the book with a brief summary about them. The Audible version was delightful!

Excellent!

I really loved listening to this. The characters are well done. The voices are believable as well. This mixes fiction with real events. The history is well researched.

Great Story Poor Narration

I enjoyed the story but could barely get through the Audible narration. Kate’s “voice” was OK but those of most of the other characters were monotonous.

Riveting Fiction Based on Titanic’s Real Story

Like so many people, the Titanic’s tragic story has fascinated me for a long time. In this book, the author has clearly done a lot of research on the actual history, using real messages/words and integrating actual people (like Ismay and Lightoller) into this fictional retelling of what happened after the Titanic sank and its few survivors being rescued by the Carpathia. From the very first scene, it's gripping; the first words are the actual Marconi messages sent between the Titanic and other ships in the area. I couldn't help but be drawn in.

The story's main character is a young woman fleeing from her tragic past, hoping for a new life in Europe, and ultimately, England with her English mother's side of the family. But she doesn't get that far before disaster strikes, and the Carpathia goes to the rescue of the few Titanic survivors. We read nothing of the sinking except what is told by the survivors; the focus is on what happens on the Carpathia and the investigations that followed.

The author did a good job putting the heroine at important junctures to learn what was going on, from when she first meets a Marconi operator who is deliberating whether or not to awake the captain after his messages weren't believed by his mates to those in society she ingratiates herself with on the ship and as the investigations into the disaster proceed.

There's a little romance here, which adds a fun element. The book blurb makes you think it will be a big deal between the heroine and two men, but that's not really how it plays out. The romance added a certain sweetness to this otherwise harrowing tale.

I had a few issues with the book, though I enjoyed it in general. I thought the heroine changed too much in the middle section in ways that made little sense for what we knew of her character, of how we saw her before. While she was on the Carpathia, she was very strong-willed, getting herself into all kinds of action with the crew and other passengers. So it seemed strange when she suddenly, in the middle of the book, seemed much more wishy-washy, always wanting to run off and getting overcome by her emotions. If we had seen a hint of that in the first part of the book, it wouldn't have come as such a surprise. I wasn't wild about the narrator's voicings of the characters. I especially did not like how she voiced the society women in such a hoity-toity way; it got rather cloying at times. I also felt like her voicings occasionally sounded mechanical, not quite how people really talk. Because this is an audiobook, there are no visual clues about the time frame. I don't know if the actual book has dates and places, but I got confused about how time was actually passing. In places, it seemed like a lot of time went by, but other times it seemed like it was moving along more slowly. I don't like that kind of confusion in a book.

Despite these drawbacks, it is a compelling story that was clearly well researched. The author has a brief note at the end describing what ultimately happened to some of the real people in the book. I like the way the romance ended, with new lives for two people who desperately needed them. If you can get past some of the narrators’ voicing issues and the character flip-flopping by the heroine, you will most likely find yourself wanting to keep listening as I did.

Slow and without a plot

This book was not of my taste. It was extremely slow, repeating over and did not have a clear plot from the main character.

Poor narration spoiled a good story

Mechanical sounding narration was very annoying.

Story not bad but somewhat disjointed at times. I wanted to enjoy it but had to listen in short segments.

Fascinating

Loved the story, but even more, I love the history and how facts were woven throughout the story. I have developed an interest in the Titanic due to my 10 year old grandson's obsession with Titanic and this story was well written with much historical accuracy.
