Story
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Story
The People's Republic of Haven made a tiny mistake when it announced the execution of Honor Harrington. It seemed safe enough. After all, she was already dead. Unfortunately, they were wrong. Now Honor has escaped from the prison planet called Hell and returned to the Manticoran Alliance with a few friends. Almost half a million of them, to be precise including some who know what really happened when the Committee of Public Safety seized power in the PRH.

Too much stream of consciousness
Reviewed: 08-29-24
This book in the series stood out for the sheer tonnage of internal thought dialog, explanations of situations from one character to another, and general background descriptions because the storytelling couldn’t carry the info the author thought important.

Story
Arto has a problem. For one, he's a robot. He’s awoken with no memory of who he is, with nothing but a mysterious letter, in a world bereft of those fleshy, talky things that made him. So why is he alone, and where have all the people gone? He stumbles upon a lost, cheeky kitten and selects it as his best friend for the adventure of a lifetime, trying to make sense of all this existence stuff. Just as Arto begins to fear he's the only sentient thing left on the whole planet, a cantankerous robot falls from the sky. She says she's his sister.

I’m in first section after the prologue, a couple hours in, and I’m struggling. Seems like a story I could read. But this audiobook is difficult. Reader is too monotone. Even when trying to do different characters it comes across monotone. I may not make it through.

I kept waiting for the story to turn around and develop. I kept right on hoping to the very end. To the very horrible end that was more like the author also gave up on the story and just stopped writing. It never really turned into a story. Very very disappointed.

I dislike that the Merlin part of the chronicles is broken into such small bites that don’t feel at all like complete books. It feels like the publisher took one book and published it in pieces so they could charge 5 times what they should have charged. I feel scammed and will not be paying again to get the end of the story. At this point, I don’t care how it ends.

Story
Henry never realized he was special. Sure, he’s an engineer who served his country, but when the virus hit, he found himself alone in a nearly empty world. That’s the key, though: nearly empty. There’s no one left who has the technical know-how to make the world run again...except for Henry. For humanity to survive, he will have to rebuild society out of the motley crew of survivors. It might be impossible, but at the same time, Henry has always loved a challenge.

An abandoned world. Stocked stores. No looting, a beautiful co-Ed. What more could a guy want?
I was hoping for a story, but got an endless recounting of how to gather in necessities. Sorry, but couldn’t hang to the end. Even the inevitable eventual hook up was a let down.

Story
Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

Interesting approach to recycling
Reviewed: 02-21-24
I enjoyed the story, but was distracted by the wholesale approach to reuse of names and concepts from the Honor Harrington series. If this had been intentionally set in that universe, then okay. Consistency would have been nice. And it would have felt comfortable and familiar instead of that little bit of continuity bump.
But it wasn’t the same universe, and the rich man Hauptmann became “the Hauptmann effect”. Allie is the main character instead of the main character’s mom. Etc.
