I'm one who loves John Scalzi's novels, but these last two have been lacking. I'm not sure if he's just of his game or has lost the magic. I'll give him one more chance with his next one, but if that fails, then I'm done.

New narrator ruined it for me.

I was really enjoying the series, but the sudden change to Christopher Ryan Grant from RC Bray was too much of a shock for me. Most of the time, I didn't know who was speaking (except for TO-96). I understand they're trying to hype Mr. Grant, but he just ruined it for me. Sadly, I won't be listening to the rest of the series.

Story
Dr. Tyson Klein is a quantum physicist who has dedicated his entire life to his research. At CERN, he analyses data generated by the Large Hadron Collider, the world's biggest and most powerful particle accelerator. Now, Ty believes he's found a pattern in its output. It looks like an organised data stream, being broadcast over what he calls a quantum radio. Could it be a signal from another universe? A message sent from the future? Or something else entirely?

A meandering mess with some daddy issues.
Reviewed: 03-07-23
This could have been a really good story, but there way too much exposition before getting anywhere. There were many times I thought, "Will you PLEASE hurry up and get to the darned point?". It became too frustrating after a short while and made it a real struggle to get through the entire book.
The author must have had daddy issues. Two of the main protagonists have fathers who had left or were gone while they were rather young yet somewhat reunite with them.
There's a point near the end where we're kind of left hanging. We don't know if the Pax agreed to the suggestion or not. We're just left to assume that they did.
I guess what upsets me most is that there was so much wasted potential for the story.
The only thing that kept me listening was Ray Porter, but even then, he didn't seem as engaged as he has been in other audiobooks he's performed.
All in all, I found this one extremely lacking.

Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Okay story, but monotone narration

The story was okay, not great. What took me out of it was that the narrator hardly differentiated between the various characters and most of the time I didn’t know which character was speaking.

I was getting disappointed in where the series was going after Book 3 (Spec Ops), but I still enjoyed the characters, even though the character development was practically non-existent. It seemed awfully repetitive. I began to think of Skippy the Magnificent as "Skippy the Repetitive". It was the same old thing after a while. The only saving grace was RC Bray's narration.
This book finally got things back on track and I was intrigued again. Skippy's character arc actually showed some growth. It was refreshing. There was little to none of the constant complaining by Skippy of "Stupid monkeys" and being upset about not being able to think up "out of the box" solutions. However, Craig Alanson still needs to "sh*t or get off the pot" when it comes to the relationship between Joe Bishop and Margret Adams.
I'm anxiously waiting for December 2020 to roll around when Book 11 (Bushfire) is released.

To add to the surprise, he is now a sentient computer and the controlling intelligence for a Von Neumann probe. Bob and his copies have been spreading out from Earth for 40 years now, looking for habitable planets. But that's the only part of the plan that's still in one piece.

Almost as good as We Are Legion We Are Bob
Reviewed: 09-10-18
An enjoyable listen. Not as good as the first book. Ray Porter does an outstanding job of narration. He corrected his mispronunciation of Archimedes (ahr-kuh-MEE-deez) and Eridani (eh-RID-uh-nee) from the first book. The story, however, was lacking in that it sort of dragged on for a while and didn't provide many challenges for any of the Bobs until near the end of the book with the Others. When it ended, it made me feel like, umm... and???? I'm not sure if that was on purpose (to set up for the next book in the series) or Dennis Taylor ran out of things to write about. It was a rather flat ending.

Almost perfect, except for one thing.
Reviewed: 09-10-18
This was a fascinating novel. I'd thoroughly enjoyed the story. Especially the use of various replicants with slightly different aspects of Bob's personality was paticularly interesting to me. The Von Nemann probes and the different ways it approached colonization of extra terrestrial worlds were intriguing. The characterization of GUPPI, once his program was modified by Bob, was especially fun. Ray Porter was almost excellent with his narration. His varied accents really made me feel like there were different characters being portrayed. I say almost excellent because the one thing that bugged me was his pronunciation of Archimedes (ahr-kuh-MEE-deez, which he pronounced ar-KIM-eh-deez) and Eridani (eh-RID-uh-nee, which he pronounced eri-DAH-nee). It wouldn't have been so bad if these were spoken once or twice, but with their repeated use, I kept cringing every time. It took me out of the story and I had to repeat a lot of the book because I kept getting distracted with the mispronunciations. Other than that, I thought Ray Porter did a wonderful job. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series. I'll try to prepare myself for any errors in pronunciation.
