I've never read a book that seemed like it was trying so hard to be a Netflix show. the world is pretty cool and interesting. however, or protagonist is kinda boring and surrounds himself with boring people.

it is fine. I listened to the whole thing. it isn't so much one story as several episodes in a longer story. Try the Bobiverse. you'll like it better.

The narrator is just OK. Not great, but fine.

I got this book because I had an audible credit and I had really liked the Newsflesh series. It was an excellent book and when I saw there was another trilogy with the author, I was ready to get it. The concept seemed interesting and unique and I had a few weeks until another book came out.

This is an excellent book. It is well written and has actual surprises in it. I’m often in a position of seeing what’s coming before it comes. In this case, there were some jaw droppers for me. It seems like a lot of modern books are written to be easily turned into movies. That means things start quick and the narrative is usually a straight line to a climactic battle. Not here. This is a slow burn. It takes its time developing the characters. It isn’t that each character is unique, but each character has a reason to do what they do. Even if what they do is bad. Actually...there is even a time or two when it is actually horrifying. Not gross or BOO! Scary, but actual psychological horror. That’s pretty cool.

One thing I HATE in books, movies, and TV is when a character does something dumb to move the plot ahead. Often times they are otherwise smart characters, but when the plot needs them to open a door that they know has zombies behind it, they do it because the author couldn’t be bothered to give them a good reason. In this case, in nearly ever case, when actions have consequences, it is because they did the thing they were supposed to do and the smart thing to do – not the dumb.

OK, I have a few complaints. However, don’t let them turn you away from the book. It is really good and I’m looking forward to books 2 and 3. First, there is a final revelation. Frankly, anyone with half a brain knew what it was hundreds of pages before the revelation. That suggests it was never meant to be a revelation. Fine. If that’s the case, don’t wait until the last page to give it away. Second, there is a case where a very experienced military professional comes up with a completely stupid and ridiculous way to try to get information from the protagonist. It completely pulled me out of the book. (On the good side, it was so dumb that I never saw it coming, so I was surprised.) I’ll admit, if I hadn’t been so long in the book, I might have stopped. It was that dumb. However, that was the only point where I rolled my eyes.

This is an actual book. I mean to say, if there was “literature” about creating medical tapeworms, this would be it.

Christine Lakin does a great job with the Audible narration. First class. Great voice and does a great job giving individual characters their own voice and keeping it consistent.

I recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed.

Terrible Cheap Unnecessary

This book is just weak. Deus ex machina exists on multiple levels. It is so incredibly lazy it is boring. The first half of the book is just plain depressing. The second half gets slightly more interesting, but there are so many cheap plot devices to move things forward that it is virtually impossible to care.

In some ways it is like We Are Bob by Dennis E. Taylor. In some ways it is similar to Ready Player One or even Ender's Game. However, it pales in comparison to all three. The prose is just so plain. All three of those books are written with a prose that pulls you along. This is written like a report that you have to read in order to perform some task.

You know who I really blame for this? Audible. Why did they recommend this terrible book. I want my credit back for this month.

Get We Are Bob. Much better series.

Good luck if you get it.

2 affluent book. I loved the first one. it was almost a tome on medical ethics wrapped in a police procedural. This novel takes world building seriously and expands the universe. our kids never beat handed, but you can draw analogies to the modern day. Wil Wheaton does a good job as always. I'm glad I preordered it. can't wait for the next. (This series would be outstanding for a TV show. )
