This is a review of the entire series. The series consists of fictional stories during the Tudor succession, though loosely related. As factual as any YouTube documentary. No magic. No war. Entirely political treachery. Plenty of gore. The book is well written and well narrated. If you have some interest in this time period in English history, the book's seedy characters will keep you listening.

Robertson is an average author whose books are published on Audible. Perhaps less than average. Robertson has had success with Dante, Blayz and TGR. But the characters are now so predictable & bland that there is zero immersion. The story's dialog is just TGR talking to himself :)

Compared to the Lightbringer epic, this book is lacking in many areas. No truly likable characters. Very little humor. Very little romance. Weeks make one of the goriest books I've heard a circus of goofs. Simon Vance can't save it. The epilogue holds promise that the next book would be worth spending a credit.

Too much fiction. I was in the mood for something educational. This was not. Nor was it good fiction. I didn't like the ending of the series.

Enroll in magic university and never graduate. Cerebral topics that will give you a headache. Petty conflicts. Monsters. No romance. Totally childish.

Though Ben Galley probably had significant input. Estes has a history of teaming up with great authors. Like James Patterson. This series is quite different from Estes' Fatemarked and Kingfall. This one has a single plotline and is told in the first person. Same great prose but without so many plots and characters to remember. And the characters are lovable in their own way. Fabulous ending to this book with intriguing lead into the next book. I hope Estes wraps up Kingfall and puts his effort into this series. The audio performance is one of TJR's best. He has the material to demonstrate just how good he really is.

Battles are fought with enchanted objects, which is the way they should be fought, as any wizard with a staff will tell you. It's not martial arts. I don't like the old multiple universe with gods running the show plotline. It seems no one can win except the gods.

I put a lot of effort into learning and remembering the mythical gods until the author's versions of them went totally insane. After half way through book 3, I decided to stop this author from mentally torturing me. I don't care who won. The author gives us no reason to care. The venues & use of magic are total chaos. It's a ridiculous distortion of both religion and mythology. I've never wasted so much brainpower as I did listening to this story.

The story is told at perfect speed and with appropriate drama and clariity. Characters have distinct voices that aren't overdone. Voices of women are realistic. Telfer has just the right amount of English accent for my tastes. Telfer''s storytelling is as perfect as storytelling can get.

I appreciate the refresher course on Minilan and the state of the duchies. But there is sufficient evidence to indicate that this story describes a dream Minilan had. None of the events in his journal have taken place. He probably didn't even write a journal.
