A lot of secrets are revealed, a lot of cultivation progress occurs, and a lot of new world building is added on. You get hints of where this is all going as well as what happened to people in the first book. Basically, it's everything you could want in a second book that's trying to widen the story and progress the plot.

The narration is great again. Lots of emotion in the scenes you expect emotion in. Honestly just get the book if you want a cultivation scifi story, it's got everything you could want and not many pain points.

If you like power fantasies then this is a good one. The main character is a bit of a mary sue but it doesn't detract from the story too much and that's kind of what power fantasies become so it's not that off base. The story is very lax with not much tension going on so it's more of a casual read. There's some comedy but it's more 'comedic situations' than anyone saying anything funny.

The narration is good but I will say there's a combination of the author writing a lot of *sound effects* and the narrator reading the sound effects verbatim that hurts to listen to. Realistically speaking, I'm pretty sure the narrator has to read the sound effects since that's what narration is, and the author sort of does this thing where they write a sound effect, then type out a sentence that effectively does the same thing the sound effect did in terms of informing the reader. The rest of the narration is great but those sound effects happen way too much to not talk about as a sort of buyers beware.

Ok, so as other reviews have said it's not ironic, it's not trying to romanticize evil characters, and it's not trying to redeem the evil mc. The main character is evil, she doesn't care about anyone beyond what use they have for her. She does seem to like her mom but that wasn't really explored in book 1 and it's extremely likely she just likes the idea of a mom. She's cruel, sadistic, and entirely self serving, For those people who are excited by that let me disillusion you, it's boring.

She doesn't have any conflicts of character, she doesn't have any sort of viable protagonist that could go against her although it's hinted at heavily that one will come later. She just kind of reincarnates, lays low for a few years while she power levels, and then kind of walks around doing whatever she wants. Spoiler, she just wants to kill people and break 'honorable' types. It's kind of interesting at first but it doesn't really change so by the end it's a rather rote reading and listening experience.

Truman Show for Aliens

The narration is great, but the story isn't really for me. From the start you learn that aliens are handing out superpowers to kids in their formative years. The story says it's because the alien's saved Earth and then offered technology in exchange for entertainment. What irks me is that everyone is okay with this. No one is mentioning that the system manipulates the people's emotions to be better or worse. No one mentions how the heroes and villains in their ethics classes are basically blasé about killing people if it means good TV ratings. All of the seriously messed up stuff is kind of thrown in like it doesn't matter. The show is meant to be lighthearted but it reads like a roman colosseum with a thin coat of paint on it. The main character got powers at like 10 years old and basically can't imagine doing literally anything other than being a 'hero' for the rest of her life. The main villain's system basically makes him insane and no one mentions that as a bad thing. It's just not that great to listen to for me.

Impulsive MC in a dangerous world

So I'm somewhat of two minds on this story. On the one hand the narration and story quality are great and there aren't any glaring plot holes that make you rage. On the other hand the main character isn't super likable so it's somewhat hard to be invested in him, There's minute character growth so I'm confident he'll improve when he's not literally a child (the book ends a little after his seventh birthday), but reading through that growth is hard. The main issues for me is that the kid has an ego the size of a small mountain and it's hard to listen to him get indignant on how people treat him like a kid (which he is) over and over. In addition to the ego problem, he also starts lying more and more. He eventually gets to a point where the only person he's ever told the truth to is his mom, but then he starts lying to her again almost immediately after because it's easier than dealing with his mom worrying about him, or stopping him from doing what he wants to do, or even just telling her what he did that day if he thinks she might be a little upset. Later in the story he tries to share his status with his sister and it's supposed to be this scary moment since she might get jealous and he almost has a panic attack just trying to tell her the truth. It's meant to be this moment of trust but it almost reads like the kid is having a full blown panic attack from even trying to tell the truth after hiding things for so long. It's a well written story and an enjoyable listen, but if you match the main character's flaws a little too closely it's hard to listen to.

MC is whiny, entitled, and extremely naive.

The story basically has the mc come into the world with a powerful core and a need to train and learn. The mc decides that since he was a mopey sad sack in a hospital he should have free reign to do whatever he wants and completely ignores everyone who tries to teach him. The wanting to escape and not be a prisoner in a gilded cage makes sense but the guy takes it a step further by acting like a middle schooler lashing out at his parents. He tries to fuck the servants, ignores danger, insists it's all bullshit magic instead of an actual cultivation system, and generally comes across as arrogant, entitled, and very upset he's not getting to do whatever he wants. I guess this is meant to be a character growth thing but it feels like the author tried to make the worst person possible in order to add some 'character'.

Nearly AI monotone along with a slow mc

The main character spends most of the time staring off into space and passively getting insulted without retaliating and then lets grudges go when people are clearly scheming against him saying things like "maybe they're not so bad after all."
I can take this for a little bit but then on top of that the mc sort of acts like he's barely paying attention in the story. He frequently goes off on tangents and checks his status screen over and over like he'll see anything important on it. At one point he literally checks his status screen while backing away from a wounded person at a higher level than him and the wounded person throws a dagger into his gut. It's actively frustrating to listen to.
The narrator doesn't put much effort into the voices or the thoughts either. It feels like you're listening to a robot calmly explain things even when the character is watching children get tortured. It's rough to listen to even when I speed it up to like 1.8x speed.

A power fantasy with a sort of monotone narrator

Let me start off by saying I liked the book. There was a consistency error at the start that put me in a bad mood but I got over it pretty quick. The story is a bit verbose in a genre I'm pretty well read in so a lot of the exposition and explanation of mechanics felt like fluff to the read time, but I think for a wider audience it makes sense to explain system interactions. I liked the mc, he was appropriately scared and genuinely came off as making rational decisions typically (some tropes just don't make sense but they're great for story telling so I don't mind those). There were very few typos and issues with grammar too. I also liked the super later explanation for why he had some busted interactions. It sounds cool and also sort of foreshadows the overarching plot later on so it doesn't come off as just some busted glitch by the end.

Now that I've explained all the good, let me start the cons by saying that I almost fell asleep quite a few times listening to the narrator. He has a very smooth voice that the story doesn't give many opportunities to really stretch. The few times he had dialogue that needed that theatricality I think it came off pretty great. That being said I previously mentioned the story has a lot of stat menus, exposition, and internal monologues. There's not much a narrator can do with that. For the few chapters where the mc was actively going through multiple pages of system logs and skill selections I basically just paused the audiobook, read the ebook, and then skipped ahead to whenever the story picked up again. I think if there was more dialogue and more emotion in the story, the narrator would be 5 stars for me, but with the way this story is formatted and the author's clear preference for exposition I think he actively detracts from enjoying this story as an audiobook.

It's a nice feel good story about fishing and helping out in the town, but the problems definitely get solved fairly quickly and it drags a bit. The antagonists don't feel compelling at all and the story generally fails to create tension. My review is mainly still so positive because slice of life stories like this are somewhat supposed to be stress free. It just feels like there's no actual friction in the story which makes it hard for any of the progression in the relationships and characters to feel "earned". It's still a good listen regardless, but I probably won't be buying book 2

Still the same great story you know and love but with the little caveat that it ends in a cliff hanger and time skips phoebe's second book. There are a lot of missing bits that will make sense by the next book or the next phoebe book but without those this one felt a little frustrating.
