Story
As a 14-year-old who just moved to a new town, with no friends and a louse for an older brother, Doug Swieteck has all the stats stacked against him. So begins a coming-of-age masterwork full of equal parts comedy and tragedy from Newbery Honor winner Gary D. Schmidt. As Doug struggles to be more than the skinny thug that his teachers and the police think him to be, he finds an unlikely ally in Lil Spicer, a fiery young lady who smelled like daisies would smell if they were growing in a big field under a clearing sky after a rain.

I usually read British mysteries or non fiction and wasn’t sure I would like this but since my book club was reading it I did. I cried at least twice during the second half. Poignantly and beautifully written.

Transformative
Reviewed: 03-22-18
One of the most impactful books I’ve ever read. Beautifully written and soul transforming. I hesitated to read it because my husband is a physician who finished 10 years of training only in the last decade, and my teenage son has cancer. I felt it might be too close to home but I’m grateful that Paul Kalanathi was able to write this and for those who assisted in its being published and who added their incredible insights, like his wife.

Enjoyable

This is my second time on this book, and I enjoy it, but be warned that it is not Agatha Christie's usual cozy, but more fantastical, in the "mission impossible" genre. If you have low tolerance for a willing suspension of disbelief this one might not be your thing.

Audible has issues with iPhones. Halfway though this story it wouldn't download anymore. I tried all the recommendations 1-10 for when it says there's an error loading. The. It brought me here to review the book. Great story, funny, some references to sex but not lewd. Some swearing. Just wish I could actually hear the story I paid for.

Slow start but overall good
Reviewed: 07-26-16
I almost gave up on this novel. It is the first Martin Walker book I've read so I hadn't read the others in the series. It's slow to start, almost like the beginnings of a painting where the author sets the scene and atmosphere for quite a while but if you keep reading you get a full and interesting picture once things get going. Now that I've read another, the characters are engaging and keep me reading.
