A good step out of my comfort zone
Reviewed: 08-02-19
I stumbled upon this book from Mr. Brooks YouTube channel and decided to take a chance on it. I'll be honest, in the beginning, the magic seemed overpowered to me and the whole neverending day thing took some adjusting to. There were times I wasn't sure if I'd like the story. But the thing that really had me sticking out and ultimately enjoying the story was the human element. I thought Mr. Brooks did an outstanding job describing a truly evil (not just a little bit here) man's attempt at redemption and the struggles along the way (I'm talking serious struggles, he didn't instantly become good!). I particularly enjoyed his interactions with the companions he met along the way. At times I was confused about a character's behavior but once all was revealed, it made sense in hindsight. The (in my opinion) overpowered magical abilities did lead to a truly outstanding fight sequence near the end so even though I was rather meh about the magic, it did add to the ending. I hope there will be other stories following the characters and I will gladly read them.

Great continuation of the story!

This was a great continuation of the story, picking up right where the first book left off. Good continuation of character growth, story plot and the friendship between LCDR Robicheaux and Dr. Sahin. There were many great moments that had me laughing along or fondly remembering my own time aboard a Naval vessel (funny what hasn't changed in 300 years!). And what a cliffhanger! Ray Chase continues to deliver with superb story telling and a great depiction of individual characters. I can't wait for the third book.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story

I'm not one who normally goes for military stories, but after reading the description and the reviews I decided to take a chance. Glad I did. This was an entertaining story from the very beginning. The struggles LCDR Robichaux endures with his crew and vessel are similar to other "overcoming the odds" stories but the author does well to make it unpredictable. While not a huge military buff I enjoyed the references to earth's historical wars and how they related to the war humanity finds itself in. There were plenty of humorous moments that had me laughing aloud as well (references to a certain space faring television show to start) and even though you only "meet" him for the last chapter, Admiral Hornblower was probably my favorite character. Ray Chase was an excellent narrator, bringing life and uniqueness to each of the characters. I particularly liked how each character had his own unique voice, from the very young midshipmen to the gruff and crass Admiral.
The only negative I really had was every now and then the characters would give long expositions on historical wars or explanations of culture, history, procedures, etc that, while important for the story, occasionally dragged on and seemed out of place for the scene. Despite that, I look forward to reading the other stories in this series.
