I cannot say enough about how good this listen was! Please have January LaVoy narrate all of Nora’s books!

I usually of enjoy Freida’s books. They’re mostly popcorn thrillers which are fun easy reads. I wanted to love Ward D. Psychology is my favorite subject.

Instead of the setting being creepy, it felt unrealistically silly. I’m all for suspension of disbelief in fiction. But come in. Two medical students left along high security psych unit with ONE nurse, no MAs, techs, security officers, or any other physicians. No cell phone service and no public wifi.

I won’t go on to list everything that annoyed me about this book but another example is the first patient’s symptoms of schizophrenia being he wanted to push his friend down the stairs… what!?! That single symptom more intrusive thoughts with OCD. While the doctor stated he doesn’t “present like a normal schizophrenic (and yes that obviously leads to kore later in the story) it sets an incorrect precedent. Being they Freida is a doctor people take her words more seriously than an author who isn’t.

Frieda’s books seem extremely formulaic at this point.

1. Main character is meek, timid, fearful, little awareness, and seemingly is so naive they never know how to handle a person or human. I have major trouble connecting or caring about the character due to lack of real character development and surface level stupidity.

2. Storyline is set up to make you think you’ve figured it out but of course it isn’t.

3. Bait and switch happens (although, I saw the main plot twist coming from the beginning it was obvious if you’ve ever read or watched a thriller based in a psych ward)

4. Biggest twist at the end or epilogue.

I’d love to see Freida put more time and thought into her next book. I know it’s more financially appealing to put out several simple books a year since people gobble them up. But, she is a great writer and I’d love to see what she could really do if she put more time into a single story and characters. Because personally, I’ve stopped caring about them.

I loved every single second of this book! It’s a deliciously creepy locked-in theory with various perspectives.

The narration was great.

By far the best book I’ve listened to/read in 2023.

Loreth Anne White’s storytelling is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Original and thrilling! I was guessing until the end and the ending was perfect!

I absolutely loved the story and the narration was incredible.

Some of the reviews focus on “animal torture”. I cannot read/listen to animal torture or cruelty. I already had this purchased so, I have it a shot. This book did contain a lot of animal dissection. A lot of implied cruelty but mostly obsession with animal dissection, innards and bone. I didn’t think I’d be able to listen but it was positioned in a way that I could. However, if you’re unable to listen to anything related to animals you may want to skip.

Other than that great story.

Gore porn written by what must be a teenager

The extreme gore didn’t bother me. The very basic premise of the story itself could have had merit. But the lack of life experience, knowledge or research around human emotion, mental disorders, medicine, doctors, abortion, rape, security, really anything the book touches.

The only way this book makes sense is if it was written by a teenage boy who didn’t haven access to the internet to do basic research and wanted to write a gory porn plot.

It was very silly.
