Good Story, but the narrator…
Reviewed: 11-04-24
Yes, the narrator sounds as if she has a mouth full of something at times and her accents could be left out, but if you can get past it, the book is really good. At times, I thought it may be an audio issue, but she sounds the same in the next book. Anyway, it’s fast paced and interesting. Many details I didn’t see coming. Another detail I noticed was the character names seemed kind of 70’s ish. For instance, Shelia, Abbey, and in the next book Brenda. It feels very 1970 and I’m not sure what year it takes place in. All in all, this first book was good.

Wow. Incredible story.
Reviewed: 09-20-24
I never know what I’m going to get with John Marrs but it’s always 💯 compelling. I found myself so invested in these characters, I couldn’t get enough, but there’s always an element of sadness that comes and goes. This family was definitely tortured but luckily there was just enough hope that kept me listening. It’s not the kind of book that you try to figure out what happened, you’re just along for the ride and it’s a good one.

Very well written but not really my cup of tea. I think, in this case, maybe a movie would be better. It’s hard to conjure all the effects and super hero things. But I liked it.

Story
One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

Sorry. Not sorry. I’m happy this was only 40 minutes. Even if this could biologically happen, which it can not, it’s still only one point of view on an extremely personal decision.

I’m glad it’s over

In a nutshell, I loved the fist one. The second one was mehhh. But this one, the third one, was just not good at all. Slow burn is an understatement. It’s as if the story never gets off the ground until the end, and even then it’s just mediocre. I like knowing about Millie and Enzo but there is a lot of over explaining the mediocrity of their everyday lives. It’s too much. And in the end, like around chapter 70, the author just kind of spits out what happened and boom, we’re pretty much done. Oh and mentioning just how handsome Enzo is, was excessive, and over the top and a bit cringe. I’m glad I finished this.

So much longer than it needed to be.
Reviewed: 05-29-24
The beginning and the ending were both fine, even good, but the 13 hours of story in the middle, I felt was a lot of useless describing of mundane things. Definitely a slow burn. Even after all the over explaining of feelings and perspectives, I still didn’t feel connected to the characters. The story goes off topic for so long in the middle I totally forgot about the school shooting. Like watching a video that never gets to the point. Not my cup of tea.

A lot of nothing

This story is so tedious. I had high hopes judging from the summary and the reviews but I’m listening and listing and all I’m really hearing is a lot of over explaining meaningless details. There are a couple of moments between all the overly detailed explanations where I thought, “ok, this is getting somewhere” but no. More explanation of more meaningless details. It’s exhausting.

In this “outstanding debut thriller” (Booklist, starred review), Helen’s idyllic life—handsome architect husband, gorgeous Victorian house, and cherished baby on the way—begins to change the day she attends her first prenatal class. There, she meets Rachel, an unpredictable single mother-to-be who doesn’t seem very maternal: she smokes, drinks, and professes little interest in parenthood.

The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

This is based on only listening for a couple of chapters but, I don’t have it in me to go on. I just listened to a 20 minute blow by blow of a girl getting knocked down by an aggressive but totally sweet dog and spraining her ankle in so much detail, it was 20 minutes of mind numbing nothingness 🙄. If you’ve listened to this book and it got better, power to ya.
