Story
Former Broadway dancer and current agoraphobic Billy Shine has not set foot outside his apartment in almost a decade. He has glimpsed his neighbors--beautiful manicurist Rayleen, lonely old Ms. Hinman, bigoted and angry Mr. Lafferty, kind-hearted Felipe, and nine-year-old Grace and her former addict mother, Eileen. But most of them have never seen Billy. Not until Grace begins to sit outside on the building's front stoop for hours every day, inches from Billy's patio.

This is not my typical listen and it took me a little while to get into it but I found myself invested in the characters, especially Grace. I just kept listening to, and it just kept being good. =)

Gut wrenching
Reviewed: 07-13-24
Even though I’ve heard the story before and seen documentaries about it, it’s still so hard to fathom what these climbers went through on this journey. It’s easy to question their decisions, motives, and soundness of mind from the sidelines so being in their shoes for a few hours was eye opening. Still a hard listen.

Too long for me…and I like long books
Reviewed: 07-12-24
I realize that I’m in the minority here but I felt so much of this book could’ve been left out. Lots of droll explanations and a lot of time that, in my opinion, could’ve been better spent covering the 5000 missing years. In that third part, it was definitely hard to keep the characters and familial lines straight. While I typically love science fiction, this was not a favorite for me but better suited to actual aerospace engineers who would live all the geeky jargon and explanations.

Marianne has a life others dream of. A beautiful townhouse on the best street in the neighbourhood. Three bright children who are her pride and joy. Sometimes her past still hurts: losing her mother early, growing up in foster care. But her husband, Simon, is always there. A successful surgeon, he’s the envy of every woman they’ve ever met. Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family. Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline, gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing - she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.

This was so good! I was convinced I knew the twist because it was “SO obvious” but I was wrong! Which was a pleasant surprise! Loved it.

It was fairly easy to figure out the twist in this one. I’m not real sure who we’re suspecting in that final scene though…
The narration was good overall. However, There was suddenly a lot of whispering and quiet narration starting in chapter 33. 🤷🏼♀️ Not a fan of that.

Love/Hate Relationship
Reviewed: 04-07-24
I loved this Foote! The twist and turns kept coming. There are characters to, if not love, at least like and root for them. And there are characters that you just simply hate. And then there are characters that you’re not real sure how you feel about them until the very end. 10 out of 10 recommend.
The narration was incredible! Now this is how you “whisper” and still be heard. There was also “shouting” that didn’t hurt my ears. I don’t know if this is simply in the editing and mixing department, but it’s absolutely how it should be done.

Going full on prepper after listening to this! Making plans, making maps, hoarding supplies, lol
My only complaint was with the narration. I typically like Bronson Pinchot but the widely varying volume of the narration drove me crazy. As someone who listens through listening devices, at a normal volume the loud scenes were way too loud and hurt my ears, and anything that was whispered or “under their breath” was literally not decipherable. Super frustrating.
