Story
When Notes on a Silencing hit bookstores in the summer of 2020, even amidst a global pandemic, it sent shockwaves through the country. Not only did this intimate investigative memoir usher in a media storm of coverage, but it also prompted the elite St. Paul's School to issue a formal apology to the author, Lacy Crawford, for its handling of her report of sexual assault by two fellow students nearly 30 years ago.

I have so much respect and admiration for the author for writing and sharing her story. This harrowing story made me feel so angry and alone for Lacy and all she was forced to face on her own. I am angry with the perpetrators, the school, the clergy, coaches, teachers and staff and her parents. This story helped me to remember the teenage girls at my own high school who were referred to as whores and sluts. Who assigned them those titles? Why? This story forced me to see and understand in a way I had not before. Thank you.

Story
A best seller in its native Canada, Drunk Mom is a gripping, brutally honest memoir of motherhood in the shadow of alcoholism. Three years after giving up drinking, Jowita Bydlowska found herself throwing back a glass of champagne like it was ginger ale. It was a special occasion: a party celebrating the birth of her first child. It also marked Bydlowska's immediate, full-blown return to crippling alcoholism.

Story
Maude Julien's parents were fanatics who believed it was their sacred duty to turn her into the ultimate survivor - raising her in isolation and subjecting her to endless drills designed to "eliminate weakness." She endured a life without heat, hot water, adequate food, friendship, or any kind of affectionate treatment. But Maude's parents could not rule her inner life. Befriending the animals on the lonely estate as well as the characters in the novels she read in secret, young Maude nurtured in herself the compassion and love that her parents forbid as weak.

I fully expected to love this book. When I read The Host I was enthralled with the story and I couldn’t stop reading it. I expected to love this book as much but it just didn’t happen. At times it was great but towards the end I feel that it really dragged.
