Slow boring narration fixed by increased speed

Love this story. Clancy has always been a bit eerie with how realistic his scenarios have been and seemingly predict the future.

Narrator has such good pronunciation that it’s possible to speed this up to 1.1 to 1.2 listening speed to get rid of the boring plodding feel.

Too bad to finish. Felt like a condensed version of an abridgment. It’s like a bad teaser trailer of almost any “coming of age” movie in the past 30’years. Teenage geek check. Unavailable love interest check. Parents dead check. Watchful yet remote guardian check. Weird things start happening on his birthday check. Check, check, check. Plot “twist” as common as a 4 way stop intersection. Acting on the principle character so overdone especially when he imagined his parents that I stopped right there.

I’d say this is on the level with stories like “The Matrix”, or “Total Recall”. And while you are having a wow moment there may be a another wow or two about “comfortable” truths.

Leave you expectations back in the real world. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a tale more corny than a bushel, with more twists than a 60’s nightclub, and enough irreverence to topple a major religion.

This story starts off seeming to focus on a current medical ethics issue, but rapidly takes a sharp turn and …. Well it’s a short story. Just listen.

If I may be pardoned a bad joke, Lois McMaster Bujold definitely shows here McMastery of story weaving here. As much as things are such a staple of science fiction, the author obviously took as one of her basic tenants that we only care about those things because she has crafted characters that we connect with. She has created a solid backdrop and storyline. With which she introduces and let’s us follow her primary characters through chaos and calm,, mortal danger and boredom. A truly wonderful experience. Enjoy!

How many genres can you cross breed into a a single story? I don’t know but this is crammed full of millennials to magicians, jesters to jet packs, and crystals to cockroaches. (Listen to this and those lines will take on an accent). Sit back and enjoy several hours of a good kind of crazy.

Really wanted to like this but the characters just felt adolescent. Felt like the Duane Johnson Jumanji movie in spaceships without the comedy. Didn’t bother to finish.

Interesting characters, seemed like a good plot.

I couldn’t finish the audiobook. I will start off by saying that it’s probably my personal (male) bias here, but I really do not enjoy romance novels. I felt like “the catalyst” had a better romance/action ratio. My suspension of disbelief kept stumbling over romance getting in the way of the story. Especially at the first major plot twist the pacing felt like it stalled on the romance, breaking me out of the main story. Or maybe I just don’t get that the romance IS the main story, and everything else is background. Not for me, but YMMV.

Great story and performance.

Good use of point of view and writing style to underpin changes in the story.
