One of My Go To Fun Listen Series
Revisado: 06-20-24
This series really should be read in order, however, there is enough information given to make them ok on their own. It is one of my favorite series to binge-reread and it always leaves me feeling good when I'm done. The characters are very relatable, and likable. The books are so well written with mysteries that keep you guessing, that these books become "Habit-Forming" to the point that my high school-age children (boys and a girl) are also addicted to the series. Book 12 doesn't disappoint, the mystery is fun and keeps you on your toes. I hope there are more to come in this series.
The narrator is one of my favorites. He does a fantastic job with the character's voices, accents, and acting. He makes this series more fun to listen to.
Parents- PG13- middle grade and up read
Language: none that I remember
Violence: normal to the genre - nothing overly graphic
Sexual Content- kissing, married couple references/thoughts to bedroom activities but nothing detailed

Historia
Beatrice, Duchess of Kesgrave, emerges from a wretched night’s sleep to discover him embracing the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. His former mistress! It is shocking, yes, but not so very alarming, for Penelope Taylor is actually there to see Bea. Her dearest friend has been brutally slain, and as Millicent Lloyd happened to be sleeping in the courtesan’s bed at the time, Mrs. Taylor is the only suspect. The magistrate is impatient to cart her off to Newgate and refuses to acknowledge the truth that is glaringly obvious to her: She was the intended victim.

Jane Austen meets Agatha Christie
Revisado: 03-23-24
Continues to stay in my favorite series. If you are new to these books you'll want to go back and start at book 1. They really should be read in order for the best experience.
Part of the fun outside of the mystery, of course, is getting to watch the growth in both characters and their relationship. I stick by my description of this series being the best mixture of an Agatha Christie mystery with the era and writing style of Jane Austen - really what could be better?
Without giving too much away this one was an interesting twist to have Bea pulled into solving a murder in order to save one of the Duke's former and first mistress. This made for some awkward moments and was not easy for poor Bea. I was however impressed with her grace in dealing with the matter. Pretty sure the Duke won't allow another such experience. This mystery had the twists we've come to expect but wasn't quite the reveal at the end that I'm used to here... my suspicions turned out correct in the end. Still a very engaging, fun listen and I can't wait for the next book and to see where this little family goes next.
Parents- PG13 - high school and up readers
Language- none
Violence- PG- murders are kept free of overly graphic detail
Sexual Content- PG13- there is just a matter of a week or two between books so they are still very much newlyweds and while there are no actual sex scenes there are a lot of make-out scenes with some pretty steamy lead-ups to the door closing, them adjusting clothing back into place, and teasing each other about better uses of time and the like
This narrator is one of the very few that I can't listen to sped up because she's just that much fun to listen to. She just fits the characters so perfectly, has phenomenal differentiations, and is simply a lot of fun to listen to. In my book, Jill Smith is up there with narrators like Jim Dale who have ruined me for the lesser skilled narrators.

Why, yes, the former Beatrice Hyde-Clare is distracted. Having settled comfortably into marriage to the duke of Kesgrave, she is nevertheless surprised to find herself in an interesting condition. And it has to be that—the unsettling prospect of motherhood—that causes her to overlook the obvious clue that Roger Dugmore had indeed been killed in his sleep.

Revisado: 03-23-24
This is definitely staying in my favorites. If you are new to these books you'll want to go back and start at book 1. They really should be read in order for the best experience.
I find it sad when a series dies shortly after the couple finds each other and gets married, and I worried early on in this series that it would happen here as well... but so far it has not and isn't showing signs that It will. I love the relationship that Bea and the Duke have and the humour goes a long way to make these books more enjoyable. Experiencing the character growth and watching their journey is just such fun and I look forward to hopefully many more. I stick by my description of this series being the best mixture of an Agatha Christie mystery with the era and writing style of Jane Austen - really what could be better?
Without giving too much away I did enjoy this one with the nod back to some personally haunting memories of Bea's early childhood. It showed a side that those with childhood trauma can identify with and seeing her stubbornly push through with the Duke's help was sweet. The mystery as always has a tangle of twists that keep you on your toes and is very engaging for the reader.

Book 3 didn't disappoint. I am enjoying this series, if you are new to them you need to know that they do need to be read in order. The fantasy fun continues in a real-world setting with a mix of the Knights of the Round Table and Chess. My review will mimic my other reviews because I don't give anything away. Rich is a nerdy 8th grader who gets pulled into this new realm and meets some of his ancestors who start him on a quest of his own and send him a guide that's his age but from a much older time. Rich's story is advancing along with his chess rank and there are lots of secrets, mystery, and suspense. In this book, Rich finds his way into the Corridor of Keys which is like a huge labyrinth made up of puzzle or escape rooms. He has to battle his nemesis again in this book and the stakes are much higher. The world-building continues to be great and the characters are relatable and keep you engaged. This is a series that ends kind of abruptly and pushes you into getting the next in the series. This is a great clean fantasy and will also appeal to chess lovers.
Narrator- He did great with the differentiations and was easy to listen to.

Parents- middle school and up should be fine
Language- None
Violence- PG- some blood but nothing graphic, lots of killing rock monsters that turn into poofs of dirt
Sexual Content- PG romance but kept clean
The storyline was pretty stereotypical of fantasy with quite a bit of political and romance drama. I do think that this book probably reads better than it listens - the dialog I think is the problem when listening all the "saids" and "replies" are a bit much in an audio form whereas in book form you can skim over them.
Narrator- Wasn't great, like a teacher reading to a class attempting voices. There was not a lot of differentiation between the characters and I felt the speed was a bit slow.

Historia
For hundreds of years in ancient Mesoamerica, the Nephites and Lamanites continued a feud started by a single family. This family crossed the sea from Jerusalem to settle in a Promised Land, clinging to the promise that God would protect them as long as they remembered him. Inspired by the narratives found in the Book of Mormon, Tales from the Promised Land is a collection of exciting short stories set against the backdrop of the ancient Americas.

Violence- PG- normal to genre nothing too graphic

This was a fun and quick read at under 4 hours of listening time. Each of the chapters tells a different story from a different time period in the Book of Mormon. This can be listened to a story at a time or all the way through. While some of the characters are fictional for those familiar with the Book of Mormon you'll recognize the real names. I really loved the story told in this book that was set around Jesus' visit to the people in America.
Narrator- did ok, was a bit slow and stilted but if you increase the speed to about 1.5x it was better.

Latter-Day Saint Coming-of-Age Realistic Fiction
Revisado: 02-21-24
Parents- PG- middle school and up - Trigger potential with losing loved ones
Language- None
Violence- PG- normal to genre nothing too graphic
Sexual Content- none
The story of an 18-year-old senior in high school trying to show his dad that he was ready for part of his inheritance to help pay for school and the start out in life. I loved seeing him learn, grow, and also try to navigate everything from friendship to family to romance. There are plenty of ups and downs to keep it both realistic and engaging. It's definitely geared to the Latter-Day Saint reader, while not overly preachy the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints do have a large role in the story.
Narrator- He did okay with the differentiations and was easy to listen to, but also a bit slow. I had a better time listening at 1.5x speed, normal speed is probably around 1.25x speed.

This is set in France in 1660 and is about an 11-12-year-old boy and his family. It shows the struggles of this family in a country arresting and killing Protestant citizens but is very much a coming-of-age story as well. He wanted to be a Musketeer but they were forced to flee in the night. That is just the start of their adventure. This is not a pushy religious story, but one that shows a family in the middle of the political turmoil and injustice of the time. I really enjoyed this one and recommend it to anyone curious about the time and/or historical fiction fans.
Narrator- He did great with the differentiations, did pretty well with the French accent, and was easy to listen to. I did notice a few repeated lines and pauses that were missed in the edit, but not so bad to take away from the story. I did prefer listening at 1.35x speed.
