Story
In Kathleen’s home, red jeans were a sin. Parties were punishable with violence. Fear was part of the daily norm. Growing up in a Catholic cult, under the unforgiving eye of her abusive father, Kathleen knew from an early age that if she were to survive, she’d have to do it on her own. But when the time came to escape, she found herself in a damaging spiral of self-destruction. At rock bottom, and with nowhere to go, Kathleen stepped off a bus in the last place she ever thought she’d find peace: a remote and very Catholic community.

Beautiful, powerful and hopeful

This book, read by the author, is such an incredible story of pain, fear, hope and the resilience. I’m writing my own memoir and am finding it hard to be so totally honest with myself and the reader as you are. Congratulations on your journey and ability to tell it in such beautiful prose and imagery💕

Story
Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

Beautiful, thoughtful And touching memoir

A beautifully written and narrated book that gets to the core of not only drinking but the universal need to escape emotional pain. I thoroughly enjoyed the breadth of the territory covered In the book, particularly self awareness and personal growth long buried by any addiction, whether it be drink, drugs or eating disorders.
