Interesting character, no Gabra

Good story ruined by a bad reader

I hate it when a story that I enjoy is messed up because the reader can't be bothered to look up the pronunciation of words that she doesn't know! That's what happened in this case, and I'm very disappointed. I've listened to Maria V Snyder's other books set in this world (the first three), and was really stoked about this new series. The story itself was engaging, but within the first hour, the reader mispronounced so many words that I knew were going to be central to the story that I couldn't stand it. I stopped listening after about an hour and a half of the recording. I'll go get the hardcopy and read it--if I don't know what a word is or how to pronounce it, I know I've got a dictionary close by.

I loved this book! And the reader's tone was perfect. She even had an African accent, which just added to the atmosphere of the story. Highly recommended!

Good book, bad reader

The tone of the reader's voice didn't fit the darkness of this story! This is a relatively dark urban fantasy, and the reader's voice always sounded either like she was laughing or like she was asking a question--it just didn't fit. I ended up buying the paperback just so that I could read the rest of the story (I got about an hour into the audio) without the irritation of the reader!

My literary "comfort food"

Great book; bad narrator

I have read this book in hardcopy, and was expecting to revisit an old friend when I got the audiobook. Sadly, the narrator has a very strange way of over-enunciating that I found very distracting--to the point that I couldn't listen to the whole thing. It didn't help that many of the names and political entities in the books are made up and, though they make sense and are easy to distinguish when seen on the page, their pronunciation isn't always obvious. The narrator's voice and speech patterns made a difficult situation worse. I wish that he had done justice to this really good book--I probably won't get the rest of its series unless they're read by someone else.

Reader did what he could with it

OK, so I know that this author has a big following, and I'm a fan of vampire fiction and of romance, so I thought why not? What a disappointment. The reader was doing his best to make a tired and trite story interesting, but there wasn't much there to work with. Christine Feehan's prose was far too purple for my taste, and I'm not talking about the sex. She kept going over the same territory again and again, with only slight variations in vocabulary. I found myself rolling my eyes and laughing aloud--and not in a good way! Add to that the "unwilling attraction" cliche taken to the extreme, and it was, overall, distasteful. This may be some readers' bag, but it wasn't mine.

This story was riveting, from the first moments. The narrators are wonderful--two very expressive and well-acted performances throughout. The story itself is spellbinding. It's a mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. This is something I'll listen to again and again.

The narrator killed it

I have to say that I really enjoyed the book itself--the main character is witty and smart (though hardheaded), and the whole plot is well done. Unfortunately, the narrator was awful. It seemed like she had not put any thought into how she was reading--she put emphasis in completely the wrong places, ran some sentences together and was very choppy in others. In short, I wished I'd read this book in hardcopy rather than listened to it. The sequel, Thunderbird Falls, has a much better narrator! Bottom line is that if you can get past the reader of this one, the story's really good.
