Took me a while to get back into the series. There are quite some interesting moments and damn it all I want more diverse character povs. I like the setting, most of the characters, and the story can be hit or miss at times but this was a good addition.

Pretty interesting

The character started off real rough and some interesting choices were certainly made but it progressed much more smoothly than I thought it would. The softer moments of character interaction that isn’t sex related were nice and needed. The corporate politics were juicy and I could’ve used more along with some world building. I’m looking forward to future books.

Ard is hunkering down in the mountains for the winter as the war cools with the snow. That means it’s time to practice his magic and stay out of trouble. Well… Ard might not be entirely proficient at the last one. At the very least, he’s staying away from the city and his penchant for annoying other people. Except that doesn’t work out so well when he’s forced to attend a ball held by the Brighthavens, though they’ll certainly regret forcing Ard’s attendance.

It’s always a bit of gamble with these books. Took a chance and I wasn’t disappointed. Interesting enough story and magic system. The characters are enjoyable and the women aren’t paper thin in terms of character writing. Solid narration as always from these two.

I was expecting a more comedic approach to the Conan archetype. What I got was a surprisingly darker story than I expected. My one gripe with it is clearly the characters care about their mistakes but the story seems to demand they keep making them. Not awful at all just wasn’t expecting it. Narrators do a good job and the mc voice is funny (I hope that’s what they were going for)

Although I like the lost fleet series more I am quite pleased with this as well. I wish I did get more of the white mantle but the story certainly enough was planted in the first book to keep me Interested in future installments.

I didn’t dislike The prior book but it certainly ran out of steam after they got out of the tracks. This book did a much better job of maintaining a story. Didn’t have a tacked on part like the last which i appreciate.
