Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Revisado: 11-28-22
Be sure to listen to author interview AFTER you’ve read this clever story where lots of real chemistry is woven into the least expected places. Complex characters reflect exactly woman’s place in family and workplace in 1960’s. Hoping Garmus writes more soon.

Historia
Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby. Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

I can't imagine reading this in a "real book" format, as the joy here is that Sedaris tells these stories himself as he reads this book to us. Enjoy, laugh out loud, shed a tear or two. Enjoyable!!

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Honesty, humor (of course), Franken's reading the story to me...no other voice would have worked here!

Franken, of course; his parents and brother; Franny; Tom.
What about Al Franken’s performance did you like?
Who else would read these words but Franken himself, with his recognizable voice?
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No,need time to digest some anger; ideas presented; politics in MN...all need THINK time.

Exceptional Narrator!
Revisado: 08-12-17
Would you listen to Behold the Dreamers (Oprah's Book Club) again? Why?
Don't need to listen again as this story will stay with me as we live in a country where hard working immigrants add to our American experience and ICE is directed to send them "home" with no regard to family and work ethic they leave behind.
What other book might you compare Behold the Dreamers (Oprah's Book Club) to and why?
Americanah ( Adichie)
Have you listened to any of Prentice Onayemi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Have not heard Onayemi's narration before. He is exceptional in these demanding dialects.

Did Not See This Ending Coming-Classic Picoult!
Revisado: 06-02-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Small Great Things to be better than the print version?
Absolutely necessary to LISTEN to this story told by Turk, Ruth and Kennedy! Performances earn a "10" as this white supremacist, black nurse, and young attorney build this story convincingly. Perfect AUDIBLE gift!
What did you like best about this story?
Ruth's love of her family and her wisdom as relayed to her son, her sister, her co-workers, her attorney. This woman is made of steel! A very special character so well developed by Picoult who wanted to write a book about "race". Good job!
Which scene was your favorite?
Ruth's parenting conversations with Kennedy.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Turk and Brittany repulsed me! Ruth touched me with her dedication to her son, Edison. Kennedy's commitment to Ruth's case and the word of the law impressed. Yes, extreme reactions - anger, tears, relief, some clever humor.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Know our America! and American voter!
Revisado: 06-02-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Eye-opening memoir of J.D. Vance, read by author. A good listen that opened my eyes as to this "hillbilly" population in our country, My book club could not avoid talking about why/how this population voted the way they did in the 2016 election......promised that all would be "great" for them.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hillbilly Elegy?
Vance's love for his grandmother as he gives her credit for saving his life. I was touched by discussion of J.D. and Mamaw dissecting the Ohio State University application.
Which scene was your favorite?
Same OSU application scene.

Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Revisado: 06-01-16
Any additional comments?
I loved OVE, so tried this one....it started slowly, as I don't care for the fantasy that Elsa and Granny shared, but these characters grow, interactions are poignant, and I found myself teary and joyful at the conclusion. Such clever language as Backman creates these lovable characters and their connections.

Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother chose to live as a recluse with an invented name, or how she'll ever have a normal life.

What disappointed you about Purity?
Foul language, very unstable characters are not enjoyable reading for me. I am surprised that this is such a popular novel in the eyes so many. Just not to my liking. As a mature adult, there are many more books I prefer to spend time reading.
